When the came up against a proper Bolton firm it didn't end well for them, but they did their usual trick and made sure the outnumbered any Bolton lads they came across. It is 30 odd years ago though, but that is my recolection

Jeebster
I rarely post on here, but I know Miami, Mounts, Issac, Brixton etc very well. From memory the Blackburn lad was an ex great lever / morris green lad who moved to Blackburn and who brought a few b/burn lads to the cup game who stood at the bottom of our side of the paddock. Burnley did surprise us before the cup game with numbers & were certainly up for it more than usual, but after the game Bolton more than held their own, the following week Bolton turned out with a very decent mob going in over the tops, but I'm sure that Burnley didn't turn out - having been to Burnley on numerous occasions in the 80's, games may be morphing into one but I do recall either the year before or year after running them into town afterwards after we had all been in their end (open end) - 50 of us from the Vulcan, & Willows, Deane went on a coach with only 1 returning on the coach, the rest (some top lads, real characters) hung about after the game and had an enjoyable day mixing it with them in the town centre, Burnley had a go several times but we held our own, only for the train to be bricked about 5 minutes after we had boarded. The bank holiday Monday game at the Bradford Arms was the largest mob of Bolton lads I've seen - must of been 400+ (we were in the Alma beforehand), it was going off under the Burnden stand, with Bolton trying to smash the doors in, but Burnley did have a go afterwards on the waste land near the old MFI. Site Supporter MickyD Posted September 20, 2020 Site Supporter Share Posted September 20, 2020 The train bricking was a regular thing. As soon as you left Burnley station and before you got to Burnley Barracks, make sure you’re sitting on the left looking in the direction of travel because there was no doubt bricks were going to be coming through the windows on the right. worse ones were night games when you couldn’t see them coming. paulhanley
Back to our previous Div 4 season in 87/88. Following the disappointing 2-1 league defeat at Turf Moor there was a quick chance for a pick-me-up with a Freight Rover Preliminary tie at Edgeley Park, home of Stockport County. Much of the game was played in November downpours, which must have been pretty nasty for those gathered in the open away end behind the goal. Nicky Brookman opened the scoring for Bolton before Stockport equalised. The excellent Brookman set up the second - a goalpoacher's header by John Thomas. And JT netted the third to settle the tie. In the new year Bolton won in the league at Stockport 1-2 in a Friday night game. Sadly that fell in the half dozen or so fixtures of this season that were never filmed due to Easy Video not immediately being replaced by Roadrunner. Others never filmed were Peterborough (a), Wolves (a), Hereford (h), Tranmere (h), Crewe (a)
Duck Egg
I have absolutely no recollection of that game. As always though, great to see footage from those days. Does anyone know the story with Brookman? These latest clips show that he was such an integral part of the side then. Was it a loss of form, lack of hard work or erm, refreshment based issues as was said at the time?

Spot on mate, very good account of things. I think the match you mentioned re the coach may have been around 84/85, they scattered after the game on the bus station. I also recall a lad from Stoneclough being in their end and kicking off, then being carried arms and legs past our end by the old bill, he was going mental, think he was called Collie. The ex Morris Green lad did indeed bring the few Blackburn lads with him, one of them Des, who ironically was also an ex Burnley fan who switched sides, that didn't go down well with the Burnley lot when they saw him. Spot on too re them having a go near the old MFI, though they weren't keen at all at the Bradford Arms, hardly surprising with our huge numbers. Is it right that this was the first time Burnley had really shown up at Bolton? We'd played them before in the 70s and 80s. I've heard a tale of how they were terrorised after they won at Burnden in 77/78 (the only team to win there that season, just after New Year). Then there was 82/3 when Jim Mcdonagh scored, 83/4 a nice match, 0-0 in the fog and 84/5 when they won 1-3 and scored a couple of screamers. I only remember a bit of trouble in the last of those three.

I was too young to remember any trouble from the Burnley games in the 70's Paul, I only started doing a bit in early 80's when the casual scene began and us smart young lads took over from the likes of those wearing miner's jackets.........fishing rod firmly cast now 😉

A lot changed between then and the early 80s with the casuals. Although even in the 80s the Manny Road North seemed to have as many biker types as casuals. bolton va va
Apart from the big NW 4, there was a period (70's }when none of the north west clubs would show at Bolton & we didn't see much of them at the away games !! Blackpool turned up a couple of times including a laughable attempt at the Lever End but they didn't last long. I believe from the elders that Blackburn used to come in the 60's but they were hopeless for years after that. It was only when fences went up, with segregation & police escorts that north west clubs' fans came back to Burnden.

I don't even really have a recollection of Burnley bringing a big following until the 87/88 Div 4 game. After that they always seemed to do so. My memory of that 84/5 game is that they didn't even fill that last third of the Embankment adjacent to the Burnden Paddock. Something seemed to change between us and them in the mid-80s. My guess would be it was Bolton fans lording it at Turf Moor in the games in the earlier 80s.

Site Supporter MickyD Posted September 25, 2020 Site Supporter Share Posted September 25, 2020 Don’t do recollection of matches to season but I thought most of the early 70s was spent a few divisions apart. Burnley played us before the season started in 76/77 in an Anglo Scottish Cup regional game and it’d been the first time the clubs had met in a few years. Early 70’s was when fashion took hold on the terraces. Styles moved really quickly from Skins, Ben Shermans, Docs, Fred Perry, Harrington jackets, Sta Prest etc Donkey jackets were around earlier but they were soon overtaken by a smarter look. The 80’s casual scene was the next generation that had moved on from suedes/skins. The terraces change styles over time but I reckon we’ve always had a few lads that are as sharp as anybody out there. p.s. Burnley wouldn’t dare to show, home or away in the ‘70’s. Rizlar
I can never remember the exact years but remember a few of us being in the Burnley end the Burnley lot legging it while the old bill removed us all. As for Burnden apart from once they never really brought many and when they did they never stood a chance.
