I'm not sure why they think he's got 'no pulling power' either. He signed Wilshere and Sturridge on loan when they could have gone elsewhere.

I remember having a big argument about this at the time with someone who thought the sun shined out of Coyle's arse. His main argument was he attracted these two players to the club.

I'm not sure what other offers they had on the table but my understanding is with loans, a player is told they are going somewhere. We did really well for both players, but they went back to their own clubs and we ultimately went down. You can't run a club based on bringing in quality loan players. Had he actually signed them, you'd have to praise him. But he didn't.

I can list some players he did attract to the club. Stuart Holden is possibly the only decent one. The rest - utter shithouses.

Maybe not, but the argument was that he had 'no pulling power'. He wasn't just given these players, he had to convince Arsenal and Chelsea, not to mention the players, that Bolton was the right place for them.

Funny if Whelan wins the Uefa Cup as well....Champions League football in the 3rd Division.

It's the following season's Europa League winners who will be the first to thereby qualify for the Champions' League play-off round.

Surely first team football in the Barclays Premier League was the pull, to two players that weren't playing a part for their club and now (when fit) are England players? It's entirely possible any manager in our position could have brought them in, or that we were the only club in for them.

No one ever said "I want to play for Owen Coyle".

I agree, I would have thought that BWFC was more the draw than whoever was manager

See I reckon they have. He's enthusiastic and effusive and talks quite a good game. If the rest of the package is competitive, I think players will buy in.

Whether they'll say they still want to play for Owen Coyle 18 months down the line is a different issue.

I've said this before, but if he's learned from his mistakes he could still be a cracking manager.

Our transition from Premier League to Championship suggests he learns slowly, granted, but that isn't to say the penny will never drop.

His reputation was on the up through the St Johnstone and Burnley times and for his first year at Bolton.

That is no longer the case. It doesn't mean he cannot be a success again, just that it will be much harder.

And his biggest fault was never learning from mistakes (and there has been no indication that he has done so recently).

Thought after Martinez had left for Everton I'd not have to hear Whelan say "roberrrrrto" again but he managed to. Like nails down a chalk board

Do we know if his circus of friends, family & fatkitmen are going with him ? I hope so.

He might not be quite as disastrous if he employs (& listens to ) some intelligent & experienced help.

I think he got found out due to his arrogance. Bringing in his hangers on, replacing folk that had been doing a good job. The medical and fitness side were criminally neglected, worst thing you can have is a shit load of extra games, if he's still there in the new year, the whole squad will be blowing out their arses or long-term injured.

There were other clubs who wanted them. West ham and Newcastle to name but two. Both could have offered them first team football but they chose Bolton. I doubt they took that decision without speaking to the manager.

Correct, he sounds like a balloon!

This. Nothing against the bloke, and happy clapping was a great short term shot in the arm, but his lack of technical knowledge compared to other managers was criminal.

I'm now praying for Wigan away with 2 games to go with us needing a win to cement are return to the premier league 10,000 whites all over the ground and Wigan town centre full of celebrating Bolton fans.

Quite ironic that my worst memory of Coyles tenure by a long chalk was the Wigan at home debacle.

Finally sunk in that day what was going on.

Certainly doesn't have the advantage of the feelgood factor he had when he came to us, one bad result and their fans will be straight on his back

Brilliant

We signed both players right at the end of the transfer window Coyle wasn't that fucking convincing.

I've had a google. Newcastle wanted Wilshire in May 2010 for a season loan. We signed him Jan 2010 when Newcastle were in the Championship.

Newcastle then wanted Sturrige on loan in May 2011 for the 11/12 season, we signed him in Jan 2011 when Newcastle had Carroll, Lovenkrads, Xisco, Leon Best, Nial Ranger, the Amoebi brothers and other forwards.
