embankment Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Dropped car odd at Kwick Fit (yeah I know they are bobbins ,but its a company car ) on Manchester Road a couple of weeks ago. Decided to walk to Asda. As soon as I passed Orlando Bridge the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. A thousand memories flooded back. The smell of hundreds No6 fags . ( ciggies before any one gets worried ). Some twat nicking my black and white scarf from off my shoulders, should have been tied on my wrist. He got away but stuck the nut on his mate when I caught up with him behind the old Trinty St station. The noise from the fans as we walked away from the ground as we walked under the railway bridge. Watching cocky away fans on the Embankment getting nervous when they realised that the gates had been opened , with 20mins to go and the leverenders were rushing in. Standing under the old scoreboard with the Wanes Butchers lads. Watching Rodney Marsh and George Best on one of the first Sunday games. Wagging school to see a midweek afternoon game. Half time proper Bovril. The shit seats in the leverend. Running across the pitch when Wolves swamped it. Feeling like crying when they won 1-0 and got promoted. Running across the pitch to get at Chelsea only to get knocked on my arse half way up the leverend. Catterol having a pre arranged scrap in the bogs. Roy Greaves scoring a last minute winner against Spurs. Frank Worthys chip. The Happy Shop. And a million more as I write this. Quote
frankietheman Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Was on the embankment for the '65 5th round match against the bin dippers, packed in like sardines. No segregation , the crowd swayed constantly, you moved with it or else. Fantastic atmosphere, wrong result. Quote

In 1977 I was one of the first to be sentenced to attendance centre on Saturday afternoon for football related stuff. This meant being in some school in Salford between 2 and 4pm on Saturday afternoons for most of the second part of that season. I used to catch the No 8 bus back and if lucky caught the last 10 mins of the game. I got off that day and it was carnage on the car park. As i remember it Wolves had already won promotion which made the 1-0 loss even harder to swallow. Quote

This is brilliant similar timeline and experience to me, I'd add the Everton Semi-Final one of only couple times I cried at the match and the 3-0 against Man United on that great Friday night and the Wolves Super John battle of Burnden and the Newcastle 3-3 game as other outstanding memories of Burnden, to see the embankment rammed full was a site for sore eyes. freds dad Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 The Embankment can be seen in this footage   and at 31:45 in this one  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86mPOHUMhsc  you can see the start of the Normid building work. Sad times Quote
only1swanny Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 What capacity /league are terraces allowed to? Â Or is it still blanket ban? Quote
embankment Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Wolves game , if we had won we would have gone up. Newcastle cup game, largest away following I saw at Burnden. Big Sam's header against Sunderland. Buying The Buff ,ink still wet with just a few fulltime results ,from the mobile printers outside Bolton Tech. WTF is that when we saw Normid. Police escorting away fans in the back way to Trinity Street. Gary Jones hat trick against City. Peter Reid leg brake boxing day in the snow. Quote
MalcolmW Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 What capacity /league are terraces allowed to?  Or is it still blanket ban?  Carlisle's ground is the largest with terraces (18k?) but you can't see the teams as they are currently playing at Preston, Blackburn and Blackpool. They have floated an idea for a 12K all-seater stadium. Quote

MancWanderer Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Christ there are so many good memories there ^^  Queueing for hours with my Dad for tickets for the Everton semi and getting three of the last tickets for the back row of the Manny Road Stand Headline in the BEN after the Sunderland game - "The Burnden Bulge" Us beating Stoke 1-0 at the end of the season and them going mental with joy as it meant that we would probably go up instead of Port Vale Seeing a lad from down the road jump out of the Lever End vs Chelsea, run the length of the pitch, and jump into the Embankment to take them on My Dad nicking two milk crates off the milkman for me and my brother to stand on and looking like a right twat carrying them to the match  Came to hate Burnden with the fucking supermarket, away fans in the Burnden Paddock, etc, but fuck me I've got some great memories of that place Quote
Rembrandt Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Sat on a barrier on the Lever End, dad behind me, for my first Burnden match in 1949. Taking a club coach to Plymouth, departing late Friday night for a Saturday fixture (pre-motorway). And one to Bath City for an FA Cup tie. And one to Manchester airport for the trip to Pisa. Rocking up to see if any tickets were left for the cup tie at York in 1958. Queuing up for hours for a Nottingham Forest cup tie ticket in 1959, only to go down with flu. Up from London for the last Burnden match. So many memories. Quote
emus wig Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 We had at least 2 goals disallowed that wolves game battered em . Played really well as I remember ball just wouldn't go in . Was their goal willie Carr free kick ? Quote
Take Hunt Off Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 No it was some horrible bandy cant used to play for Leeds I think . Was in the Burnden Paddock that day & when it kicked off at the end a Wolves fan knocked over a copper on the pitch who immediately grabbed the flag from the pitch edge centreline & was about to twat the wolves offender with said timber when he realised there were about five thousand pairs of eyes watching him he glanced around & the whole paddock roared their approval & he whacked the offender right across his back knocking to the floor .Funny moment on a grim day.
