We do, as sometimes our centre halves push up and Santos is left alone. An intelligent defensive type will fill in into any gaps defenders may leave as required.

Thomason is also a decent passer of the ball too, so not overly arsed if he doesn't go dribbling at players or getting into the box too often.

Can cope against most teams, as we've seen already. But perhaps not against some.

Our defence hasn’t been the problem excellent record last season our issue has been creating & scoring

You look back to the 5-0 wins & pizza cup we are more free without him imo yes good passer but we need more from our midfielders, players who will get the ball moving quickly with tempo

if it comes as I’m targeting GT that’s not the case I just don’t think he suits us right now that’s all

I know you're not having a pop at him. I'd point out the Fleetwood game. Everyone said they were the best we'd faced at the time, but we whooped them nonetheless. Maghoma with freedom to make those killer runs into the box. Once taken off, Fleetwood seemed to come into it more.

When both Sheehan and Morley play, one of them seems to sit deeper, and I don't think we've seen the best of Morley's attacking skills since he's been asked to add defensive work to his game.

In the days of yore, aka my schooldays, our really very capable & far from soft schoolteam was changed wholsale twice a season when we came up against the Hayward Schools team who were hard as nails & gave no shits about who they kicked & how hard. Especially so away at Hayward.

Their teacher encouraged it.

From about 3rd year the selection met fire with fire & an ugly scene it was.

Sadly we don't have a bunch of Dennis Miller's, Dave Brady's or Paddy O'Malley's on our books.

GT I think could become the type of player we are talking about and would probably benefit from someone coming in he can learn off.

It sounds very simple but it is the type of player who when you play against and you think 'how did that annoying shit not get booked' whereas at the moment GT will pick up silly bookings early on and is then in danger of a red  Fleetwood being a good example. Just a question of experience.

It also needs players in other positions to be a lot better than Saturday too !

When we play well and/or are given time and space to play well, we look really good at times and Morley and Sheehan suit that style of play at L1 level perfectly - they have to as we don't have strikers who can create something out of nothing so they need some quality service from midfield. Unfortunately other teams know this and are not going to give us any time and space in midfield, passes start going astray, strikers get isolated, defence gets exposed and it all goes tits up.

Our defensive record was good last season - but not against the better and more athletic teams so it makes no sense to keep doing the same thing this season if we have ambition - and starting both Morley and Sheehan against Wigan was borderline suicidal. Sure taking one or both of them out of the team reduces our creativity, which is why we need a better quality player in there alongside Demps - someone with steel AND creativity - and that costs money as Evatt pointed out.

So there are three options - hope that GT or one of the new guys develops into the kind of player we need or scour the foreign markets for someone who can do the job and we can afford or go for a loanee from a top side - the least attractive option.

Personally I don't mind how we get one, but there are going to be a lot of games where we sure as hell will need one.

As we will even more if we make it into the Championship so we should be looking now.

Genuine question - do folk genuinely  believe there’s a magical meathead available out there who will play in L1, who we bring in for certain games ahead of Thomason/Morley/Maghoma, who’s going to transform us into winning every game?

That massimo luongo impressed me last season with Ipswich and the one below with Sheffield Wednesday

Someone like him would fit the bill

I think we have what we need though between George and Paris

Both of the Ipswich midfield pair were brilliant and are now doing it at the top of the Championship.

Good shout. I remember him. Somebody like him would be a fine addition, but no idea how much Ipswich paid for him and how realistic it is that there is somebody like him available and affordable for us.

Which is why at this stage I also agree with you that we may have what we need already.

And I include Sheehan in that. His breakup and link play since getting back to his best has been fantastic.

All this talk of not performing, battling and taking the initiative against top 6 teams - stand out games for Sheehan last season were Sheff Wed away and Plymouth in the final.

I don't think it's just a case of getting one bastard of a DM in, though one would be a start as our current back 3 and WBs aren't strong enough against better sides. More an all round physicality and attitude issue, we are too lightweight and easily bullied in too many areas of the pitch

We came a cropper last season against sides who had sturdy physical specimens all over the pitch, even in wide midfield positions. Ipswich, for example, aside from having Morsy ratting about had a big lad (Hirst) up front, some big defenders and a big strong RWB (Clarke) who frightened Mbete and Williams to death. Port Vale gave us a very tricky game on ours with a similar approach.

Wigan were similar again, physically more robust lads all over, from back to front, not just with one dirty bastard in front of back 4.

Until we see how the management/players bounce back from last weekend, there's a grave danger of many Bolton 'fans' massively over-reacting to one game.

Against Burton? Are Burton one of the top teams we struggled against last season that cost us promotion? No. they were one of the crap but physical teams we've struggled against on a garbage pitch in the past.

Simply not representative of the games we struggle in that we're discussing. Derby might be one though.

It was the second 0-4 home defeat in a row to Wigan. I think people have every right to react very, very badly and the club needs to hear it.

Agree with this. But, we were very dog shit against Wigan. No bottle whatsoever, and that's something that's unforgivable.

Also Maghoma looks average...

I reckon they have now.

Traf's correct in that if they respond correctly, then we should be OK.

However, under the circumstances, "fans" have every right to express the obvious. Indeed after the game is the correct time to do so.

Get behind them Saturday now.

Judging on 1.5 games !    Give the lad a chance, hope he starts on Saturday,  his and Mendes-Gomes fitness must be getting there now.
