They're the games you want to avoid defeat in

It's the others that you should be winning

Exeter away etc

But in theory we win at derby and we go up

We didn't fare to well against the top 6 last season either, though those numbers looked better when posh get in ahead of Derby on the last day

Top 6 next season isnt getting any easier with Brum, Huddersfield and Rovram coming down. Barnsley, Peterborough still about and big bucks Wrexham in the mix.

Fucking wish id not typed that now, looks terrifying

Correct it wasn’t just a few games

shrewsbury, Exeter, burton, Charlton, reading I can go on silly points dropped

in fact the more you look at it we should’ve been home & dry with plenty to spare

Derby lost at home to Wigan and Oxford as well as drawing with Cambridge

They also lost home to Charlton and at Reading

They could easily say with those extra points they should have been home and dry with plenty to spare

There was only Pompey who were pretty much consistent so couldn't pick out many matches where they really should have got points

Only concerned about us

we really messed this up whichever way you look at it

We are well capable of getting promoted next season, we know the division, we have basis of a top team at this level, Johnston back is like a new player, couple of tweaks within the squad and finding a plan B&C and using this seasons disappointment as a motivator I’d not rule us out and we should not be feared of anyone. (I’m now firmly in the keep Evatt camp, as we need as little upheaval as possible)

We need 2 experienced midfielders who can tackle and take control as atm we have no leaders in this team!

Brum are unknown and don't currently have a manager. Huddersfield should be up there with Duff now in place. Rotherham will do ok with Evans but I don't see them challenging. Barnsley - they'll fade. and Wrexham - very rare for teams to come up from League 2 and challenge again.

Spin it another way. We have stability, players contracted, and a great reputation for the work we do with Premier League loan players (Bradley / Maghoma / Trafford) so expect one or two more to come in this time around. Charles and Collins together will probably be the strongest forward two in League One ... and, whilst I don't buy this mentality stuff as much as others, I do expect Evatt to bring in some genuine experience at this level (one or two that perhaps have a couple of League One promotions under their belt)

I doubt we'll run away with it, but fully expect us to be top 2 or 3 again next season.

I think there’ll be a number of “good” teams next year but I don’t see any outstanding ones which should mean teams taking points off each other every week. If we can bring in one or two key additions I could see us being the outstanding and more consistent ones just like Pompey this year. Because of the number of decent teams I also think the points total needed to be in the top two will be lower than recent years so hopefully both players and Manager will have learned from the disappointment this year and an intent to put it right next time?

I think it's a mistake to think of the "big games" solely as the matches against the top six

Correct.  You've got to throw in the local derbies (that matter).  When we played Oxford in the league at home, of course it was a fantastic result/performance and more evidence of how entertaining we were at home in 2nd half of season, but it definitely wasn't viewed as a "big game" or a 6 pointer at the time.  It was just a game to be won before we got on with the serious stuff of Derby away 4 days later.

Arguably Shrewsbury at home was a bigger game in terms of pressure to win/crucial games, and we came up short (apart from Maghoma who was absolutely outstanding).

Personally think some are in for shock last season was poor imo, the 3 relegated sides haven’t got off field issues like the previous seasons had and  agree Charlton will join the party add your season campaigners like Peterborough & Barnsley it will be interesting

FWIW I'd be surprised if Birmingham, Huddersfield and Rotherham go into the season with lesser strikers unless they are under pressure to sell.

But I think the issue is how easily Charles and Collins can be nullified in most of the big games.  If they score 15+ league goals each, 90% of them against teams outside the top 8, great, but that's not going to get us over the line in the games that matter.

And throw injuries into the mix, they aren't playing 46 league games and in Charles case he rarely stays on beyond 70 minutes.  We're already 2 strikers down with releasing CJ and JDB, its a position that really needs strengthening with good quality, not just numbers (ie Dan and Vic).

If someone comes in for Charles we will be 3 strikers down.

I think Charlton will be contender next season, can’t see a repeat of this seasons point tally being required either.

I thought they would be this season but they certainly should be performing better with Alfie May up top and a full pre season under Jones

They could do a Pompey…thought they looked strong at our place, they’d be my each way bet next season.

Point being Derby can also say they didn't do as well as they might have.

Just did that bit more than us.

Of course we were well ahead earlier in the season but finished badly, they started poorly but got stronger.

If we'd taken points when we had games in hand over pompey, we may have won the league.

That's without them necessarily getting any fewer points.

Lots of ifs, but no point going over them now as it will just do your head in. Leave that to the players and coaches, have the summer off, and get refreshed for next season.
