A lot of talk about this being another 'golden generation' Southgate should be winning this comp with but, as in previous tournaments, there's an element for me of players getting talked up a bit too much based on club form, where they may play with better players in certain positions, in different systems and with different managers who have their own ideas and motivational qualities.

I'm not sure some of ours are the God-given talents we'd like to think they are. Nobody was sure our back 4 would be good enough, we had no genuine LB and, arguably, no-one to be the other half of the double pivot Southgate evidently prefers

After a few shit games the anticipation and thrill is still there. Fuck it, no worries, a couple of players will step up, tactics will change, we’ll go on the offensive and show what we can do and how good we are. Take a few hits but blast at the opposition when needed. Will be reet

Ah….wrong England. T20 and all that. Miles fucking better than this shit

We have just been played off the park by Denmark. They have a smaller pool of top talent but they play a system that suits their players and keep the ball better than England.

Eriksen and Hjoberg have both been extremely poor this season. And yet they completely dominated the midfield tonight. That’s just embarrassing

Not read through thread but imagine 90 minutes of watching that and a season of Bolton thoughts will have been covered. Pitch was terrible a few of our precious super stars did not fancy it.

Trippier at left back is a joke - managers fault

Rice was awful but he is a midfield of 1, teams just walk through us when they go forward. Evatt like.

TAA is not a right back and he is never a midfielder how is he even playing ?

Bellingham played like someone who has been reading how good he is. Sat sulking after he had been tackled before jogging back

Foden one brilliant run but had to give it Kane

Kane luckiest goal you will see as it broke to him but after that terrible

Could not string 2 passes together.

How Palmer has not go pitch is crazy !

Sadly I think I know what Southgate is trying to do - and why the players don't understand it. Seems to me he is obsessed with "the lines" not getting separated so we play it like table football. We don't want to leave "pockets of space" between them, do we?

So when someone burst forward, or a ball is played out wide with acres of space to run into, they have to pass it back rather than push on and let the rest of the team catch up - and they won't all bomb forward to support that player because "the lines" would be broken, so back it goes.

Net result is that we either nudge up the pitch slowly until we can camp on the edge of their box with their entire team defending in front of us, or get pushed back and have to defend our own box en masse.

So stilted, so boring, so predictable, so unimaginative, so table football.

I was told Palmer won't play because of some row between Southgate and Kane about selecting him in the first place.

Nothing on the left/Grealish on the beach/Gordon on the bench/Eze with the handbrake on.

And the quality players that were picked are being told to do stuff they've never done before and which is not natural for them.

It's shit. Need to let them off the leash and let them do what comes naturally to them.

Sadly, there is little that is unfamiliar in all of this. For once though my expectations were very low thanks to Southgate so it doesn't seem as depressing as usual.

First two names on the team sheet for the last group game for me would be Watkins and Palmer. We are qualifying anyway so now's the time to take off the shackles. He won't though.

Keep wondering which yes man puppet they'll appoint after this loser has gone.

I felt we beat Serbia by "the skin of our teeth" & now we've drawn with Denmark by the same fine line.

Southgate is an automaton & it really is like watching Bolton when we play a team that won't co-operate with us.

When Kane, the captain, on live tv says 'the lads don't know what's being expected of them' that's a very big slap down. Southgate bleating that he's missing his pivotal left back (who's not played since January btw) and that the TAA experiment isn’t quite (!) coming off as he's "not found a replacement for Calvin Phillips" those are disastrous comments after 8 years in the job.

Wouldn't be arsed if Jude and Foden don't start the next game there's far too much hype about them.

Gordon has to start on the left

Maino or Wharton in midfield

Kane can start using his legs or fuck off

Should be sacked on the spot if he gives Trent one more minute in midfield

Kane dropping deep is a problem, games completely passed him by.

Rooney did the same backend of his career

It's not like it's a new phenomenon though. He's been doing it for the past 4 seasons.

That's his game. Done it all season at Bayern. But at Bayern he players overlapping, much like Son at Spurs.

Normally he sprays the ball about, the overlaps on and he's in the box on the next phase with support.

With England he's doing that bit nobody is overlapping and he has no support.

It's like it's a big surprise to everyone and Southgate.

You don’t drop two of your best players. He should put them in positions so they can impact the game. Bellingham alongside Rice and Foden in the 10 role. Then get a left footed player at left back who can support the left winger. At least then there is some balance. Maybe he will discover his best eleven by accident as he is clueless in that respect so far.

You do if they're playing like a pair of herberts

Just heard a pure geek stat on a podcast but it's pretty stark, "passes allowed per defensive action". How many paases do you allow the opposition to make before attempting to challenge them. How good is your pressing basically.

Apparently last season Spurs were the best at it with an average of something like 8.8, Forest the worst with 18.

England's yesterday was 28!

Sums it up.

Pep gives his players 5 seconds to get the ball back after losing it.

As much as I don’t really agree with you linking it all back to ‘wokeism’, as I think he just reflects the way of the world today rather than anything exaggerated, I do think you’re bang on with your overall assessment of him, poor manager tactically, proven loser in big games and just generally flat and yes, you knew what was coming.

Imagine coming into this tournament (or hopefully the next World Cup) with Mourinho in charge! Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a bit outdated from a club point of view but in terms of preparing a team both tactically and mentally for tournament football, especially with his link to England from spending so long here etc, I think someone with his nouse and charisma would have us in a completely different place. It must be shit for the likes of Bellingham, Foden et al going from training under the likes of Pep and Ancelotti every day to turning up and having to listen to fucking Southgate - its no wonder they look so flat!

Those Kalvin Phillips comments though. Fuck my life.

Akin to Sunaks comments about Sky TV or fucking off from D-Day.

How to disenfranchise your selection of midfielders and a whole nation in one foul swoop.

Add to that Kane's comment

"when the teams drop a few players deeper we’re not sure how to the get the pressure on and who’s supposed to be going"

Sounds like we need a total reset, this all reeks of terrible preparation for a tournament

Hopefully it's not too late to sort out

We live in hope! in reality he’s got a week to sort it, he’s had 8 years so not expecting him to coach the team to do it in 7 days. We’re coming home pretty soon, unless Bellingham has a maradona style influence on the big games.

as much chance of that as Ollie Watkins turning into Marco Van Basten
