Lostock Whites Posted April 11 Posted April 11 Promotion doesn't hinge on the result today and I'm sure none of the teams in the top 6 think they are good enough for promotion either. No need to overreact despite a truly horrific performance. One thing I will say, which I have said all season long however, is despite the relatively okay number of goals conceded this season. Whether we go up or not, we HAVE to change the defence, it is a shambles at best. Toal and Johnston, both been here for a while now are both not good enough. Neither is remotely comfortable in possession, in which is a recipe for disaster for such a high possession side. And both make fatal errors consisitently. Our whole team but particularly the defence just ball watch. How many times did you see 3 players around 1 player but then none of them have the desire or intelligence to follow the man making the run? We are a reactive team, not a proactive one. Hence why we only start playing properly when we are losing. Toal for their goal, he's just stood in his space waiting for their corner to land to him and is nowhere near his man. Conway is young, his first full season in League 1 and has had good moments and I'm sure will get better. But even he is an academy player. We have not invested a penny into the back line. Not taking chances this season has been our Achilles heel. But also as much so has been giving away cheap goals. And every attack starts from the back and our back line is just so poor. Will have to be patient for now and continue to back the lads to the end of the season as it's our only choice. But good god we need some improvements in that back line. Quote

You need around 90 points to get top 2. Occasionally it drops to 85 as when we last got promoted out of league one. We're currently on course for about 77 and that would likely be 4th or 5th. Quote

Flip it round and I reckon it’d be 26k+, possibly even a sell out given a win basically means promotion. I think their excitement at getting back up to the championship and our's are two different things. They seem pretty bored by the whole charade of a "promotion battle", they haven't had to wait about 8 years for this. They haven't had to break sweat all season and have done their best to blow it but realise there's nothing to beat. There's no jeopardy or sense of achievement for them, at least when we got back up from our only season in L2 we had to come from well behind and it felt like a great achievement. They probably feel disappointed they've blown the title. Quote
ianofcleveleys Posted April 11 Posted April 11 (edited) We were evidently a few short today of a team that would properly trouble them, even though, again, they were nothing earth shattering. If Forino wasn't 100%, fair enough, if Kenny’s injury has flared up, not ideal, two knackering each other in training even less ideal. CBT's early departure the biggest loss, brought in as an admission Gale and Cissoko were both shite and was a mile above them. That's the mitigations out of the way. That line up, with the fixation with 4231 is, as said last week, going to kill us. None of back four look comfortable, two in midfield are overrun, full backs have weak wingers in front of them, an absolute mess, with piss poor goals given away, as they are being every week. Surely to god SS can see what's playing out in front of him and be big enough to admit the need to change. He did it once and got two away clean sheets back to back. We need to start looking like hard to play and score against, and sharpish. Edited April 11 by ianofcleveleys Quote

Popular Post Eddie Posted April 11 Popular Post Posted April 11 First rule of our defence this year is that as long as he’s fit, it’s Forino plus one / two others. He is far and away the defender that we have that is most suited to this league. It’s bonkers that he’s spent so much of the season on the bench. Quote

You take lincoln out of the equation as they are now , we would have been 2nd for months , I dont think we would have let that slip and we would have been on more points as we would have been going for it . we havent been in the equation since lincoln away this season and results have reflected that . Traf Posted April 11 Posted April 11 What has emerged for me is that as a two, Sheehan & Rodrigues look like there could be something there. RR doesn't look like a fish out of water with the ball at this feet like many of JS's other partners have this season. We've not seen much of them together so far, but there could be something there. Not wanting to have a massive pop at him on a bad day but that’s a key part of management sending the team out with belief. FFS Blackpool got a point there so it’s hardly scaling Mount Everest 🤷♂️ Quote

barrycowdrill Posted April 11 Posted April 11 There’s been some decent recruitment decisions over the past 12 months or so. There’s also been some questionable ones. however the collective decisions that have been made around the back line time after time have been absolutely abysmal. said it before but mistaking numbers for quality was the first one. Then 2. Making Toal ©️ guaranteed he started every week 3. signing a CB with the sole intention for him to play LB and the other option being an academy lad whose worst asset is defending 4. at the time the signing of Christie looked a shrewd move. Brought in experience and cover. However then getting rid of your starting RB exposing him to more game time than he can probably do and moving a winger who sulks when he has to defend in there is ludicrous 5. letting a defensively sound player leave as he wasn’t getting game time and replacing him with a prospect who hasn’t had a sniff 6. only playing your most dominant CB when you play 3 at the back our problems are bigger and wider than just defensively of course. But when the inevitable failure in the play offs occur, the biggest factor for me will be the defensive issues that have plagued our season and the decisions which have led to them Quote
Cowdrill Posted April 11 Posted April 11 just watched that with my lad. Knew as soon as I saw the team sheet that we were in trouble. Sheehan awful again. He plays deeper than most of the defenders half the time leaving Dempsey on his own in the middle and we get overrun again. Surely the defender can make the simple pass rather than Sheehan coming so deep. No coincidence for me that the decent run we went on was when Sheehan was out injured and we had Dempsey and Erahon in the middle. Forino should start every game. Especially away from home. Apter should never play for us again. Gale is weak as piss and has offered nothing for weeks. He looks like he’s not interested and he’s scared of his own shadow. Cissoko and ACD play for me for the next few games if he has to play two wingers. Also, Sheehan needs a rest if any of the other centre mids are back for Tuesday, he’s massively overrated and offers next to nothing. One good pass per game shouldn’t make him undroppable. Just not having it that he’s some kind of 3rd division Messi. Quote

We haven't spent a single day in the top two all season, and without looking it up I'd guess we haven't been within 3 points of second since we beat Plymouth in our first home game. We've been miles off it. Quote

We wouldnt have let that go and our performances would have improved holding on to second rather than settling for the play offs which is what we have done for the last 2 months . As for the positions we would have ended up oin due to other seasons totals , well we once got in the play offs on 69 points . Quote
gonzo Posted April 11 Posted April 11 Win one, Draw one, Lose one. Consistency or lack of it has killed our autos hope. We've rarely put a decent run together. The sooner the season finishes the better and we've just got to pray we throw the kitchen sink at the play offs. Whichever division we are in, we need a full new back line. Fullbacks, Center backs and a goalkeeper. You don't win automatic promotion with weak as piss inconsistent defenders that flap under pressure. Quote
