The competition was a concept put forward by the then editor of L'equipe. UEFA refused to allow a club competition to be called European Cup as they wanted to keep that for a future competition between national teams rather than clubs, so the word Champions' was inserted. But even in its first season not all teams were domestic champions. Malcolm,. I'm convinced that this year's final creates a new record The number of years since the finalists won their domestic league Something over 80 What's the next highest, something in single figures? If Liverpool can be as good again then great but if not it’ll be a stroll Agree with both of Bolty’s points - they’re amazing to watch but an example of why football is broken. Pretty sure Liverpool's points total would have won the league in every year apart from the last 2. They were tremendous and in missing out continued their recent league tradition of glorious failure.

Thinking about it, it won't be single figures as Liverpool have been in other finals and haven't won the league since games were in black n white

You are more wrong than you have ever been on any subject, football or otherwise. The answer is infinity, as Bayer Loserkusen were in the final in 2002 but have never won the German league title. Technically it’s not infinity though is it as the clubs haven’t been in existence for an infinite amount of time thus it can still be quantified in actual years. OK, well Bayer 04 Leverkusen were founded in 1904 and the first German title was the previous year, though it was contested by area league champions in a knockout. Guest
If Spurs win the “champions” league, will they be the winners who have won their domestic league on fewer occasions then any other winner to date?

Nottingham Forest - two European titles but one domestic.
