This is always useful to provide a bit of context. People have generally got no idea how harmful alcohol is. I've said before on here - when I first became a nurse I was expecting the wards to be full of people who were lifelong smokers - whilst there were smokers there were far more drinkers. And there were drug users - but far, far fewer than the other two.

GHB is 9th harmful? Tell that to those gay lads murdered with the stuff...

Heard of it implicated in other crimes too - brasses, rentboys using it to rob clients, a few pegged it as a result iirc, it's got massive contraindications with other CNS depressants like booze - mixed with even small amounts it can be lethal.

13 definite, possibly 14 or 15 including 'spikings' (not by brasses or rentboys) and/or mistaken identities...

Number 11? Or that's how many you've tried?

Mines 12 (tried) :)

In my youth of course!

Both.

Number 11 was the realisation I needed to can it all. Went for a piss at a party and got locked in the bathroom for two hours as I couldn't find the door. Was convinced it didn't exist and I'd somehow climbed in from the window.

We've all been there! :)

Kent, if other substances were given the same legal status and therefore ready availability as alcohol, would they overtake it on the graph?

Good question. I don't know if I'm honest. I imagine if cocaine was freely available and regulated it would cause a lot more societal harm than alcohol.

The harm to user part would be pretty static though I'd imagine?

Always respect number 11!

I got locked in a disabled toilet at a hotel for my works Xmas do for god knows how long. Had no signal on my phone. Couldn’t get out couldn’t ring anyone door wouldn’t open. Couldn’t figure it out pushed and pulled on door lock wasn’t on but door wouldn’t budge

Went through a bag nearly trying to figure out how to get out which at the time I thought was helping

my misery ended when someone heard me in there and slid the door open and it was my boss who had come looking for me as I had been gone an age. Difficult one to explain

Know a few people who've wrecked their lives through coke addiction - losing jobs, houses, marriages, kids, the lot. I only did it occasionally, but I realised it was trouble when I found myself crushing and snorting ProPlus at 5 in the morning while everyone else was asleep, trying to extend the party that was going on in my head. Madness.

If someone is seriously hooked, there's not much anyone can do until they hit rock bottom and ask for help, or suffer serious health issues.

Awful drug. Turns people into absolute cunts. At least smackheads keep themselves to themselves while they're on it. Cokeheads think they're great and everyone needs to listen to them.

Problem solved. Custard bob and fanny5 are bing heads. Who would’ve thought!!

Either I don't get it or that graph is shit

How is harm measured?

The graph isn't perfect - it's put together by risk analysts. Harm to users is measured by variables like mortality and long term mental impairment - harm to others is measured by variables like crime and propensity to violence.

Even the author admits it's not without its flaws - but reckons you'd have to change the variables by some margin to alter the order that they appear.
