Flip it on its head. If women don’t feel safe out in the dark have a darkness curfew for them. Be a bit crap in winter but so be it. Let’s see if we can get one of the MPs to suggest that watch the Facebook meltdown off the back of that. She should be sacked for saying something so ridiculous and get an account on here talking that amount of shite

I'd be more scared of bumping into her at night so would be happy to stay home.

Grab me some Reisen and some dirt cheap (v average) beer for @Youri McAnespie

B&M is shite for ale.

They do do a knockoff Amaretto that is practically free and indistinguishable from the real McCoy in coffee.

And Mcewan's Export is, pound for pound, the finest beer in the land.

I'm on the wagon atm anyway, sort of, one can of E3 Lager, one big bottle of Tyskie in about six weeks.

Look

Ive no issue with a vigil, raising awareness etc.. it’s a reaction to a horrible, shocking event. Fair enough.

The bloke that did it has been caught within days (assuming it’s him of course). It’s an utter one in a billion chance that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Its rare to see blokes leaning off scaffolding, or out of van windows whistling and jeering at women nowadays ( @gonzo will never change). Attitudes are much better.

Its the same old story that social media is driving people to do something, and if you dare show a shred of dissention or disagreement, you are thrown into the pit with the perpetrators. It’s fucking mental.

It’s becoming a huge game of oneupmanship every time something shit happens.

Shit things will always happen.

You think that's rare now? It's really not.

Quick survey at our house showed that our lass and my eldest daughter have both been touched inappropriately more than once, you can't legislate for a random fucker who commits murder but as a wider issue ask women at yours who ever socialise if they've had the same happen to them.

Good on anyone who does something to try for positive change

I'm not a fan of protests, in that I've never done one apart from McFarland out, as I doubt they make a difference

Thing is, you assume she did feel safe walking home alone, because she did

I guess it's a reactive gesture this vigil, but I doubt many females are thinking twice tonight, as it's such a rarity, tragic as it is

Sorry if it's already been stated, but did the copper know the poor lass beforehand, or was it a random attack on her, albeit probably planned?

It’s not known yet. People are speculating that she was abducted.
Statistically, women are over 75% more likely to be killed by someone they know.

But will someone burning a candle and putting it on Facebook decrease that 75% number Boby? That’s what we are trying to get to understand here?

To be fair mate that's like a white bloke saying racism isn't an issue because they don't experience it

I always wind my window shout "oi oi saveloy" in a cockney accent when i see a nice arse when parked at the lights

Don't be so ignorant to what's going on in the world

I crashed my d reg vauxhall astra outside Bolton college on manny road perving and shouting at a bird. Cost me a fortune. Didn’t educate me or change my behaviour. I now keep the windows up though when making smutty comments. Because I’m old and should know better.

I’m sorry, you’re probably right.

My time spent on building sites may have skewed my view. There are rules on them now about social behaviour. Anyone caught leering at women have to remove their boots and watch as they are nail gunned to the floor. The more sever punishments include being locked in a portaloo for an hour after a dozen builders have shat on the toilet seat.

Ill say this

Im not a rapist/murderer or mitherer of women. So if I saw one walking alone right now I would generally try and get well away for the reasons mentioned by others in the thread.

However, if I went up to a woman on the street and said “I’m dead safe me, don’t worry. Would you like me to walk you home or wherever you’re going?” I would expect to spend a night in the cells.

Its not as straightforward as saying men are the problem just because they’re men.

And what about those who identify as both, or neither, or as a bag of owls or something?

Once staying up in the lakes with my brother and his mate.

We've just bought a chippy tea in Windermere/Bowness and are in the car heading towards the lake, with my brother driving.

We pause at a mini roundabout or somesuch, and his mate in the front passenger seat winds his window down and says to a couple of young ladies "fancy a chip?".

They eagerly grabbed a few and we carried on conscious not to hold up traffic.

Within seconds, there's a blue light behind us, we're pulled over and our kid gets breathalysed. 😁

Buy their fucking own in future!

Why are you trying to be so obtuse?

I assume you can point where anyone has suggested the 75% figure will change ?

Nobody has said a vigil will stop nutters being nutters.

But if it helps raise awareness of what type of behaviour women find threatening and plays a part in the gradual reduction of such behaviour why are you opposed to it ?

I repeat the vast majority of people are decent and sensible the vast majority of time and would never knowingly scare or intimidate a woman so why not do what we can to educate folk on the little things they can do?

Trying? I’m not trying to be anything.

i just happen to feel it won’t make a jot of fucking difference for the reasons pointed out by several people on here.

ive also said well done to people if they actually get out and do something about it rather than trying to court favour or moaning on social media. If you’re not happy get off your arse and do summat about it. Actions speak louder than words.

now if that’s ok? with you we can move on.

The McFarland protests...

I liked how he went from 'McFarland' to 'Farlan' in the chants.

And the BEN saying the insults 'of a sexual nature' were out of order - like we'd been calling him a nonce or sommat.

I also got to verbally abuse Dion Dublin that day, called him a munich reject, a copper, probably an active münchen came over and bollocked me, probably would've clipped my ear in times gone by...

You are being obtuse the statement that we are trying to ascertain if the 75% figure will change is almost the definition of obtuse.

The reason I say obtuse is summed by your later para when you applaud the folk doing it .

You asked me why was I “trying to be obtuse” what was my reply?

I don’t need to try to be anything. other than a nice person which I’ve failed at so I’ve decided to be a full time cunt like spider.

so as I said I will move on even if you want to labour the point.

I posted before adding the final point.

My point is that you are 100% IMO not a cunt, as shown by the fact you acknowledged respect for people doing something they believed in. It just then seemed strange to try and turn the discussion back onto changing the behaviour of the nutters.

I’ve just no time For folk who moan about stuff but do nowt about it. Have a look on the “politics thread” for a very good example. So I’m always going to say well done for doing something and in this case whilst I don’t think there is any point whatsoever personally it can’t really be criticized as a cause I don’t think.

Let’s agree to disagree eh

I would imagine that those on a vigil aren't the ones you would be aiming it at.

Some cultural changes needed, perhaps with a change to the curriculum at secondary schools.

Fuck religious education off for a start, include a little of it in geography or history if absolutely necessary, but use the time for more pertinent things.

Ii's not only women who aren't safe though, I have got a taxi every Saturday and Sunday from Colls to home for the last 18 months (pre COVID), it's a 15 minute walk but I was mugged/beaten up twice in the space of 4 weeks walking home and I'm getting too old to fight back when there are 3 of them. I seriously played with the idea of buying a little BB gun for safety reasons

My ex Mrs was raped when she was younger. Probably shouldn't be posting this shit on here, but fuck it, it's relevant. Two of us are still close friends and meet up from time to time.

Anything could trigger the trauma to resurface. Random shit on the telly, the way certain lads would behave around her, or something that happens to a woman that becomes mainstream news. She was never under the illusion that we could make the world a safe place for everyone. But she refused to accept that we couldn't change some things for the better. Going on various protests with other women and being part of local community group helped her, also made a genuine difference at times.

This event will trigger shit for some people and it will bring other things to the surface. That's normal and it's not a bad thing. This isn't just about the psycho that killed Sarah Everard. It's depressing that people can't see that.
