Especially if it's a final. There has been plenty of "minority" sporting events that I've made time for to watch in the past. The Olympics has kept me up to all hours. I love the cut and thrust of international sport when we are involved. Especially If we have expectations of doing well in it. I'm surprised that folk who love football will choose not to watch the final on Sunday. Maybe for some it's a misogynistic attitude towards women's football. Pretty much sums up my thoughts. I consider myself to be a passionate and patriotic sports fan, whatever the sport. Whether it’s Hamilton, Murray, British Curling team, Seb Coe, David Wilkie Lennox Lewis, Dina Asher Smith or Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball and the men’s/women’s football teams I’ve gone out of my way to tune in and support them in their endeavours. I’ll be doing the same Sunday morning. Looking forward to it Quote

So would you watch/celebrate any women’s great sporting achievements even though the standard might only be the equivalent of a semi-pro men’s? Paula Radcliffe, Denise Lewis, Jessica Ennis, Becky Adlington, Women’s Hockey Golds, Emma Raducanu, just a few off the top of my head that I can recall watching with some British pride. And by the way this isn’t some politically correct motivated trap that I sometimes breeze over on behind the stands. I’m genuinely interested to hear whether any of those or any other Women’s sporting achievements interest/have interested you? Quote

Fair enough. What is it that interests you in that, a fight which obviously won’t be the same standard as a mens title fight and a Sport that you love, but not the women’s football World Cup final with England in it? Again not a trick, genuinely interested. 😊 Quote

The standards of women to men isn’t that big a gap in boxing. I spend a lot of time at the gym where she trains (and spars blokes) and I’ve been watching her come through the ranks for a few years now. I just can’t take to women’s football, not sure what it is and I know I’m definitely not alone. Maybe if I had a daughter who played I’d have a different outlook? however it’s something I struggling to take to. Quote

I’ll be honest, I watch the odd big title fight, but I’m not the biggest boxing fan, so I’ll bow to your superior knowledge on that one. I have a sporting daughter so I think that definitely re-affirms some of my interest in watching the women’s teams/individuals - don’t think I would have been as interested as I was in the Netball World Cup for example! 🤣(Plenty of fitties as well TBF 😂) However, that said a lot of those other women’s sporting achievements were before she was born! So I’ve always had a patriotic pride in seeing the best Britain has to offer, men or women. Anyway cheers for response, another perspective. I bet you wish it was that easy on the the politics thread! 🤣. Anyway bedtime now before the big game tomorrow. Quote

I made a point earlier that I have watched many sports and events that England/GB have competed in and are expected to do well. Normally I would have little to no interest in these sports and even less knowledge in. I'm watching as a spectacle and wanting us to kick the world's arse. I watched Raducanu win the US Open but it never entered my head that the power and standard was the same as a 15 year old lad at at country club level. I won't lie I once dismissed women's football with contempt. I laughed at the standard and ridiculed it. If folk don't like it then that's fair enough. But if they don't like it because they are comparing it to men's semi-pro or less standard then they are missing the point. Edited August 18, 2023 by Underpants Quote

Ani Posted August 19, 2023 Posted August 19, 2023 I will probably watch the game and certainly want them to win. The players whilst professional in their approach do have an endearing old fashioned feel when interviewed, maybe because they are not all multi millionaires by the their teenage years and part of a well oiled trained PR machine that we see in the Men's game. I do think however that the Women's game needs to build its own identity, constant comparisons to the men's game in terms of money, quality and wether the king should attend games all feels a bit desperate, especially as in virtually every aspect the product is inferior. It is a bit like comparing test match cricket with all its traditions, history and faults with the 100. We have had a life time of investing emotion into the men's football, the best in my experience was 1990 but for others in this country it will go back to 1966 ( not old enough to remember 70 or much from 74), how can the women's WC that was first held in 91 expect to match that ? I know it is only a song but footballs coming home talks about 'that tackle by Moore' and 'Nobby dancing' all part of the anguish of watching England play. The lionesses (no problem with the nickname for me) deserve to make their history and legacy as a stand alone sport not piggy-backing or being compared to the Men's game. Curling became a national obsession for a couple of weeks, middle distance running for a while, the decathlon and heptathlon were the greatest Olympic events for a while. Hopefully women's football will have a longer legacy, I think it will, but who knows ? Quote
Roger_Dubuis Posted August 19, 2023 Posted August 19, 2023 What the England women's team have that the men's teams don't have is bottle. It is heart warming to watch an England football team that doesn't choke under pressure. If they can follow up winning the European Championships by winning the World Cup there is no debate about them being the best football team this country has ever produced however unpalatable that will be to some. Watch them miss 3 penalties now.... Quote

jeep Posted August 19, 2023 Posted August 19, 2023 I'll be watching the Lionesses, cheering them on. They're good to watch. The improvement since Sabrine took over has been massive. Those comparing it to men's football are missing the point completely. The big thing for me is that the women's success has got young girls wanting to play sports, plus now having female heroes to look upto. Except Lauren James 😁 Quote
Tonge moor green jacket Posted August 19, 2023 Posted August 19, 2023 I agree entirely that it should be judged on its own merits. That said, if folk aren't that interested, so be it. I don't make a point of watching the ladies league (BBC?) as I'm not that bothered. Seen the odd hit but not much. I watch match of the day and live men's league games though. I've no great interest in boxing, horse racing etc, irrespective of the sex of the participants. Anyway, flag is going up shortly. COYWW. Quote

A bugbear of mine is the infiltration on Americanisms in to our life and language. I wouldn't put this as one. Then we disagree. The RL teams jumped on this American idea to sex up their minority sport and it has spread. A bit like a preference for the names Zane, Dion and Hunter over Jack, Tom and Algernon. Pitiful. Quote
