Where's that ale thread gone?

Few years ago in Bruges I was in a bar that had a large menu of all the various beers they served

All kinds of fruit ones so thought I'd try a banana one, don't know why but decided when in Rome and all that

Tasted and went down like a banana milkshake except it was around 8%

Glad I noticed as that could have got messy very easily

Ale, if you look into it historically, was actually just a way of preserving water and stoping it from tasting like mud.

Traditionally, it was flavoured with everything from nettles and berries to spices and herbs.

It’s narrowed down to 4 ingredients as the centuries have passed but 14th century ale would probably be infused with fruits and other stuff that seems weird to us now.

Maybe worth trying a few.

Ale formed a large part of the diet - they needed the calories. They would have a 'small beer' for breakfast because it was full of nutrients and was had by children as well. Certainly wasn't to get piddled on and did usually only contain yeast, barley and hops - not much else.

The vikings loved a honey ale but that was far too expensive for most people, and wine certainly was out of the reach of anyone but the nobles.

Our Loft is always on that Belgian stuff. He rings me when he's had a few 8.5%ers and a smoke. Mithers me to fuck about cricket, which he knows I can't be doing with. Can't get rid of him.

Some malts do produce a chocolatey flavour, bit like some hops produce the grapefruit flavour.

All fine in moderation.

Still wouldn't want to drink something sold along the lines of these beers though. 

"Cadbury's whisper ale" wouldn't cut it! :)

Was in Spain last week in a place called La Herradura, just east of Nerja. Uncommercialised, mainly Spanish with a smattering of in the know Brits, Dutch, Germans.

Some good local beers at very fair prices, Victoria Málaga at around 3 euros for a large one. Cruzcampo similar. Only around 3/3.50 for a large glass of red in restaurants/tapas bars. Our raging inflation not touching them much there

Just back from visiting a pal who lives in Alhaurin El Grande up in the hills out of Malaga. Oh my. The ale, wine and food is summat else and a fraction of the price you’d expect.

Indeed, none of the tourist premium loaded on in the bigger places, great quality at prices lower than I paid in Lanzarote 4 years ago.

Here for a period of months. Pint of Mahou where I am 2.5EUR in certain places. Victoria Malaga same. It was 3EUR up until 30th September.

Well used to it by now but still only 5EUR for a bottle of most spirits which never fails to astound me.

Missus likes the odd Aperol Spritz now and again. 5EUR covers the bottles of Aperol and Prosecco in total! One glass of this in Perth would be around the 10EUR mark minimum.

He must mean the same mob who has endeavoured to get Spain to make things as difficult as possible for Brits with virtually zero success. The Spanish know which side their pan is buttered.

Same mob who tried to make a thing out of Gibraltar - again with no success.

The only place they have managed to stir up a modicum of difficulty is in NI and that particular fit of pique bastardry will also come to naught in the long run even though it's the favourite hobby horse of  a few bitter remoaners on here.
