Gaza at Italia 90 was the best I have ever seen in  an England shirt for a whole tournament.

Beckham v Greece was good as a one off but Gaza looked the best in the world in 1990.  But he was 50/50 to even make the squad.

Spurs fans I know say he was brilliant there  till the injuries

The italia 90 documentary shows that 90 was romanticised... Gazza was good but we beat no one of note and didn't play good football by modern standards.

2018... Trippier and Pickford deserve their own documentary

💣

Moving this bloke to the loon section.

There was a romance with Gazza.  He was just a normal lad who was incredibly gifted.

You could easily imagine him fitting right in with you and your mates.

I'd have absolutely fuck all in common with Harry Kane.

For me, thats the difference

Harry Kane is a decent bloke by all accounts

If your basis is would they be a laugh down the pub, then modern football will disappoint you

When he could be bothered

He could spend 89 minutes wandering round the pitch doing nothing then scoring an absolute cracker

Southampton fans may think he was loyal staying there but for me he lacked ambition

If he went to a big club then he'd never get away with being so lazy

Watched the Beckham documentary last week, it’s mentioned on there a conversation someone had with Messi asking him for tips, he said you all run about to much! Messi just strolls through games barely breaking into a jog then the next minute he’s beat 3 and banged one in the top bins. I reckon Messi watched MLT as a kid 😃

Anelka was like that when he came to Bolton. He wasn't wasting energy chasing lost causes. Was getting labelled lazy in his first few games.

When delivery was improved he'd be on the end of it.

Class.

Genuinely stumped by anyone not seeing Gascoigne as supreme in his time

But in that era, the way he took the ball, and ignored the “play it long”, and just took it past players was amazing

There were your box to box supremos, your players with the pinpoint long passes but he just went “fuck it, give me the ball, and I’ll just walk it through anyone and any team”

Was absolutely opposite of the footy being played at the time

I see Grealish as having some of that quality- being able to have the ball seemingly stuck to his foot and he drifts by players.

He's more one footed though and can be frustrating.

Comparing top players from different eras isn't particularly easy though- pity we can't pit them against each other!

Yeah. Pointless comparing players from different eras imo. Would he have done well in the current era? Who knows? Would Pep let him play like that? Would Southgate?

I’ll take him for what he was, when he was. One of the best

There was a great series on Channel 4 about Gazza's time in Italy, and Serie A in general when he was at Lazio.

Didn't he only play about 40 games over his three years there, before "retiring" to go and play Scotch football

Yes I think so, and the programme went on for years. The entertainment was the stuff Gazza used to get up to and the stuff he did in training.
