thing is, for me, when pondering all this, i really struggle with what a team, any team, did 100+ years ago

as in

i don't give a fuck really

preston were huge in the 1800s

the 1800s

so what

Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world, but have only really been on that trajectory since the 1960s

prior to that they had won 5 titles on a par with Sheff Weds and Sunderland

This was my arguement yesterday before @gonzosnapped at me.

Times move on.

Think Chelsea had only won one title pre Abramovich.

They've won six in total

The same as Sunderland

One less than Villa and Everton

Mad that innit.

I'd say Everton are bigger than Chelsea overall.

That’s correct. I remember when there was talk of Chelsea building a new stadium in 2015 and one wag said, “ You can’t wipe out 10 years of history just like that”

If you know your history...

European honours

Chelsea 6

Everton 1

And I've excluded the 2 UEFA super cups Chelsea won

If modern history counts then ancient history counts too. Preston and Huddersfield had their success and that is in the bank. Things have been lean for them since those glory days. If Huds & PNE hadn't have had them glory years they would be on a par with clubs like Peterborough, Hull and Reading. But for me they are a notch above them because of them days.

My mate grew up in West London in 70s 80s. QPR were the big team, no-one supported Chelsea.

A lot of the older ones on here remember thousands of skinheads from Chelsea in the day and QPR were nowhere near their size as a club or a fan base.

Surprised at his comments.

I remember seeing this video a while back.

As of 1965, we ranked 4th in terms of number of points won in the top flight, only behind Villa, Everton and Sunderland.

I know that was a while back, but still I just find it crazy to believe that my parents were growing up with us being so high, ahead of the Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City, Man United, Chelsea etc.

it's all relative though

Hull and Reading have done the PL more than once so they  have that in the bank

Preston's invicibles only played 22 games in a season

we've played 12 cup games this season and only technically lost 2

it's an achievement, but when players had a pint and fag at half time, it's not quite matching up to today's standards

almost like 2 points for a win, instead of 3

Would qpr not have been a division above for a few of those years?

And had a very good team that came close to winning the league?

think that's the point

Another criteria to throw into the mix

Bolton have provided 28 players who have represented England, total of 120 caps

Ipswich have provided 12 players who have represented England, total of 155 caps

🤷‍♀️

Yes but they had Barry Knight who was worth more than ten internationals

There are tables on t'internet of the most successful English clubs by trophies won and we're about 20th with our 4 FA Cups. Half of the current Premier League are lower than us, but then teams like Blackburn, WBA, both Sheffield clubs and Sunderland are ahead of us. As are "The Wanderers" from Leytonstone who won 5 FA Cups in the 1870s.

It's all bullshit. We're a third tier outfit these days and the chances of us winning another FA Cup or the Premiership in my lifetime are slim to none - not that it will stop us trying. We are the best club in the world and that's all that matters.

19th

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_football_clubs_in_England_by_competitive_honours_won

the "Wanderers" are in 23rd who haven't existed since 1887

shout out for Old Etonians in 29th

and they are above Birmingham, who some here think are bigger than us

that's also another table along with all time league and PL where we are in the top 20

we're one of the biggest top flight teams not in the top flight

Either way you look at things, there's certainly a lot of things to be proud about when saying you're a supporter of such a magnificent, traditional club of the English game like ours.

Whether you mention Lofthouse to a 90 year old, or Okocha to a 30 year old, people across the world know of us.

There's a lot of things about us that makes us unique. There's only a handful or two of clubs you could pull out that have achieved more or have had as big as an impact in England than us.

Founder of the league, first scorer, first team to win at Wembley, highest ever recorded attendance, first team to sign up to the army in the 2nd world war, 4x FA Cups, 3x runners up including Stanley Matthews final, 2x runners up League cup, 73 years in the top flight, only bettered by Sunderland & WBA outside the top current flight, 2x in European football knockout stages. There's a lot there.

Our footprint on the English game is certainly huge. In short, we are massive.

Everton are bigger than everyone except Utd, Liv & Arsenal.

Maybe similar to Spurs.

Just my opinion of course.

I'd go with that.

We bigger than QPR then?

Sounds like a deluded QPR fan to me. Don’t think QPR ever brought more than 500 to Burnden, Chelsea another story.
