MalcolmW Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Interesting to see a lot of empty seats at the second semi yesterday...71k crowd compared with the 75k for our semi. Fans saving themselves for the final - as was the case with us. The sooner they stop playing semis at Wembley the better. Probably sometime around 2086 when we've paid for the stadium about 50 times over. Cheers FA. There is a commitment for, I think, 15 years. But the FA will be severely criticised at the H'boro inquest for allocating 1989 to a ground whose Safety Certicate was not up-to-date. This may contribute to keeping Wembley or maybe only having a small number of carefully monitored grounds in contention. Quote

Plus spurs, Liverpool and Everton should all have new grounds by then too. I can't see why they should stay a wembley other than money (which we know it will boil down to in the end) Quote
davidjack Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Emirates and Old Trafford have much bigger capacities than the grounds that were used for years - namely Villa Park and Hillsborough. And one of them is brand new and state of the art and the other seems to manage quite comfortably getting 75k in and out every other week without any bother. One in the north and one in the south - job done. Quote
gonzo Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 talking to a Blackpool fan the other day who said he liked oysten as the club had stayed financially sound and not overstretched itself. I pointed out that he seemed to have pocketed most of the money himself but he wouldn't have it. Must be related to him that's all I can think. He's from Fleetwood though and I remember you saying they're not wired up right. Just remind him that Karl's fathers company was a paid as a director during their season in the premiership. That payment was the second largest annual salary paid to a director in the entire football league, only behind Man City. He also bought a piece of waste land land off his father near the ground for over £10 million They train on a school field in the winter because its too hazardous on their normal training pitch which doubles up as Blackpool's answer to Hackney Marshes on a Sunday morning. This despite earning £90+ million 2 season ago. I could go on and on and on. I think the guy is highly amusing, but he's one bent bastard. Quote
tomski Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Would it be fair to say their promotion was a complete fluke? Quote
COYW Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Would it be fair to say their promotion was a complete fluke? They nearly managed it twice to be fair. Quote
gonzo Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Would it be fair to say their promotion was a complete fluke? I know for a fact Karl Oyston didn't want it. He had to spend some money on the ground then. Quote
COYW Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 I remember the FA saying that the use of Wembley for a semi-final was a one-off for the Spurs v Arsenal because there was no neutral ground in London big enough to accommodate both sets of supporters. Then the two Sheffield clubs got to the semi-final and they rolled out the same excuse. No ground in the north was big enough to accommodate the supporters. Once they'd realized there was money to be made, tradition went out of the window. Quote

MalcolmW Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 Actual facts, ITK facts or factamundos? 1991 SFs: Spurs v Arsenal @ Wembley and Forest v West Ham @ Villa Park. 1993 SFs: Spurs v Arsenal @ Wembley and SheffWed v SheffUnited @ Wembley, after appeal by the Sheffield clubs that their opponents were gaining an unfair advantage. Until the new Wembley stadium was built the record semi-final attendance was for a replay at Maine Road (80,047 for Derby v Birmingham in 1946). Quote
