I think Debenhams going may be a blessing in disguise.  Apparently they pulled all the punches to get the Market Hall changed from small family run stalls to what it is, then a few weeks back our council were looking at getting stalls put back in,  perhaps not on the same scale,  but this could be a turning point for that side of the town centre if done correctly.

im sure it will be a turning point if they go

and not for the better

as for the council wankers blaming debenhams, fcuking hell

Can’t remember why but did a project on The Top Storey Club fire at school. It was on that road that goes down the side of The Old Three Crowns down towards the old multi-storey that’s been converted into retail units iirc

It's covered in this article from a few years back - grim stuff.

I remember my sisters talking about the fire when I was a youngster and people jumping was mentioned. A bit more info here

Cheers for that. Have to say that made my blood run cold again. That was the first time I had seen grown men openly weeping in Bolton. The second was when our beloved Whites were relegated from the old First Division.

Imagine that choice - jump from on high into what was effectively a concrete and cobble stoned gully or burn to death/die from smoke inhalation. It seems that the resultant odds were in favour of jumping.

Same building Bolty - Beachcomber,then Cromwellian,then Playmate,then Maxwells Plum.

I remember the bouncer Bob getting stabbed to death - it was grim and shocked the whole town as that type of thing was very rare at the those days, i went to school with his sister at the time.

Fairly sure the Top Storey club was across the road and further down Bank St.

Cheers mate. The lad who stabbed the bouncer was part of the in crowd at the time and I have to say, a hell of a nice lad for whom I had a lot of time. Totally out of character ans a waste of two lives really. Alcohol and drug fuelled haze resulting in a tragedy.

Its re-opened as a car park again....well bottom 2 floors. Its a charity carpark.

Also a little swimming pool now open. for babies and toddlers to learn, private group sessons. Looks really nice, had a little tour round the other week, the owners seem really nice.

Nobody is sure whats really going to happen with that building. Sure I heard that its been sold from the original people who planned it to be retail & bars etc, heard its for sale again. Northern Monkey was going to be ijn that space....just took too long so they chnaged plans to Nelson square.

The old town hall facing wht was Founders is oppening soon as bar and restaurants. It will be a couple of chains though.

About time they did something with that place. Great building with a lot of history. Don't mind chains so long as they are sympathetic with the building

Indeed, always thought Pizza Express on Wood St did good food, nice building too.

I dont mind a chain, but too many of them just dont really offer value.

In the vaults, only nando's does well. All the other chains are stuggling, and are dead.

Chains are a more safer ROI for the council or whoever owns and has re-built the new town hall (or similar) buildings

Rent and bus rates are very high, stopping smaller and even local people taking a chance in of these new venues.

Some excellent buildings in and around the town that could be cleaned up and used for shorter term small start-ups.

Less outlay for them, can take more risks and we can benefit from people maybe trying something they dreamed of.

Imagine McGinlays old pub....cleaned up, and 4/5 little food places and a pop up bar, bit of music, even free for bands and artists for hour slots etc.

As ridiculous as it sounds...

...too far from town centre to work.

Got a letter off the council yesterday ,slightly threatening tone, reminding me that the waste in my bins is my responsibility and i should look after it and my bins in a manner that is fitting in order to keep our town center in the pristine manner that they would aspire to

The bin is on Bank street FFS ,do they not see the boarded up dead town district that it is in

and no it wasnt my shit all over Bank Street, my bins get done Friday before the kids get to play out at the weekend

"War-like conditions in the NO-GO zones" seems a bit OTT

scrubbers point fireworks at cops is more accurate

I'm sure the cops will have an idea who it was and be back to have words

Not town centre but I noticed, perhaps belatedly, that they're demolishing the old Great Lever library building. A real shame...It's probably largely due to the early groundwork put in there as kids reading and lending that a good number of us G/L scallywags didn't end up in the rank and file of smackheads and/or career criminals.
