The Wanderer Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 Is Cape Verde Worth a visit? Going away first week in November, toss up between there and canaries. Got two kids, 7 and 1. I know fuck all about the place and trust the opinion of wanderersways better than those fuck wits on trip advisor. Quote

According to pointless tonight they've a higher ranked national football team than Scotland. Quote
Youri McAnespie Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 Why not do both? Â Bintercanarias fly there from Tenerife and Gran Canaria (Ryanair to there)... Â A bit of a fuck about with children I suppose... Quote
Casino Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 According to pointless tonight they've a higher ranked national football team than Scotland. Last March have they were ranked 30 in the world  Pointless them rankings Quote
The Wanderer Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 Why not do both? Â Bintercanarias fly there from Tenerife and Gran Canaria (Ryanair to there)... Â A bit of a fuck about with children I suppose... I'm dreading the thought of two 4+ hour flights with the little shits, let's not ruin a holiday adding another two in there. Â Honestly though, it's something I'd love to do, travel about from country to country. It's something to save for when the kids have fired off I think. Quote
victor meldrew Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Like the sea? very good.. Â usually sail at night, new destination on most days. Â anyway each to their own, but don't knock it until you've tried it. Quote
MickyD Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Iceland next week, Crete in June and will probably fit something else in around September. Â Did I say I'm going to Iceland tomorrow while you lot are freezing your nads off with all the snow? Quote
stevieb Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Did I say I'm going to Iceland tomorrow while you lot are freezing your nads off with all the snow? Pick us up a prawn ring while you are there. I'll give you £2 when you are back. Quote
C86 Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Did I say I'm going to Iceland tomorrow while you lot are freezing your nads off with all the snow? Â Went last Easter going back this Easter but not touching Reykjavik. You'll need a coat Quote
fishbulb Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 So far we are going to Barcelona next month (Half Marathon) Milan in May (final of Giro d'Italia) Maybe a trip in the van to French Alps to cycle up Alpe d'Huez and Mont Ventoux Quote
Tonge moor green jacket Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 very good.. Â usually sail at night, new destination on most days. Â anyway each to their own, but don't knock it until you've tried it. In fairness I wouldn't rule it out. My mum went on a Baltic cruise a few years back and really enjoyed it. As long as sufficient time in port to see places then OK. Would prefer to wait until such time as could have at least three or four weeks to get the best. Quote
Biggish Dave Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 I've only done 1 cruise basically around Italy but dropped in to Dubrovnik. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it but it's not really for me. I just felt the whole entertainment thing was a bit 'samey' and I would also have preferred to see some of the places at night aswell as during the day. Â It's a great way to get a taster for places but I won't be rushing to do another. I can see what people love them though, you see a lot with no hassle of finding your own way around Quote
fishbulb Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 We went on one last year, round the Canaries. I wasn't expecting to like it but the Mrs wanted to go for her 50th. It was actually pretty good. We only had one day spent completely at sea, otherwise it was sail overnight and arrive in port in the morning. Fully inclusive so (decent)Â grub and booze were on tap all the time. Fair mix of ages on board surprisingly. Lots of folk we spoke to had been on umpteen cruises. Would I go again? Maybe. I think I'm with Biggish Dave on 'em. Quote

There's next to nowt on both islands, but the hotels are pretty high quality. Preferred the beach on Boa Vista. Sal did have a bit of a town to mooch about, but nothing to make you want to stay there for long. Â Riu Touareg on Boa Vista. Very isolated, great for a week, take a book. Good food, enough entertainment to keep you amused (with young kids), beach is great - though you'll probably not be able to use the sea - very rough. Â Melia Duna on Sal. Able to get into the town from here pretty easily. But like I said, not much there. Hotel has pretty much everything you will need. Good restaurants. Decent snack bars. Loads of pools. Kids pool areas. Mini water park. Beach is just ok, not stunning. Beach bar is great for chilling out on late afternoon at sundown. Quote
White on Tyne Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Have sailed on a number of cargo ships and I know some of the big container lines also take passengers on their "round the world" services. So to avoid all the fat Americans and irritating Canadians you can still visit some tremendous places, watch a working ship and also less chance of getting norovirus. Try CMA CGM. Quote
birch-chorley Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 (edited) Where have you travelled to on these Cargo ships? Is the at sea / in port ratio not a bit too much the other way?  Edit... Just had a look, seems interesting...  83 days from Europe to East coast of the US, Panama Canal then through Polynesia to Australia  Must cost a few quid with all your meals included, still think I would get a bit bored when your at sea for weeks on end with no stops  Also not much chance of getting 83 days off until retirement so its off the table for the time being Edited January 11, 2017 by birch-chorley Quote

Widnes Two Hats Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 I went upto Pidgeon Point yesterday, got settled on the beach and there was probably a dozen people milling about, after about 30 mins of reading my book I heard a massive commotion, looked up and there was about 1000 Italians heading towards us who just got off a cruise ship. I was like a scene from the walking dead, how wandering about a city with a 1000 other joeys all arriving and leaving at the same time can be enjoyable is beyond me. Plus one of the locals was telling me that all the bars and restaurants put the prices up when the cruise ships arrive then put then back down again once they've left. Needless to say we packed up our things and fucked off. I'm going back again on Friday and hopefully this time there won't be gangs of Meldrews swarming about the place Quote
Casino Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Exactly  And the stench of stale piss is particularly off putting Quote
victor meldrew Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Boring farts, how was the self catering? You can read a book anytime, why go abroad to do that! Quote
Widnes Two Hats Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 I'm currently sat on the balcony of my villa, it's 87degrees, the sun is blazing down on me and I'm drinking a cold bottle of Carib, we have a balcony that goes all round the villa, to the left is a beach with about 4 people on it, directly in front is a blue and green sea, there a pelicans diving for fish, there are stingrays with a 25ft span swimming about, there is also a coral reef with parrott fish, puffa fish and all sorts of bright coloured fish I've never even dreampt about, to the right and at the back of us is the oldest rainforest in the western hemisphere, there are squirrels running up and down out balcony, parrots, humming birds that are drinking some honey water we put out for them, there's wild goats, chickens, roosters and all sorts of wildlife running about in front of my eyes, there are bright blue and yellow birds everywhere. A bottle of beer is between 80p and a £1 per bottle, a rum punch is £2.50 and a half pint of vodka a coke is £3.50. Tonight were earing at the boathouse which is on the beach, there's a drum band on tonight, cost of a 3 course meal with 3 or 4 cocktails is about £15 each. On the main beach every evening there's a bonfire and live music, street vendors selling rotis and spicey pasties for about 50p each. There's live music on and the locals are extremely friendly. It's not acceptable to go into a bar without a tshirt on but perfectly acceptable to smoke ganga at the bar. We've eaten at a different place each evening, the cost of jeep hire is £30 a day and petrol is 34p a litre, we've been all over the island, Argyle falls, spent  3 days in a shack in the rain forest and just generally chilled out at out own pace. Now give me that over a crowded ship queueing up for your buffet breakfast and given a strict timetable of what time you can get off the boat and what time you have to be back anytime Quote
Widnes Two Hats Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Ha ha, I was going to say Scarborough but we're just out of there in Castara. I feel like Robinso Crusoe, I suspect nothing has changed here in the last 100 years, well except wifi and cable TV, the locals still live in wooden shacks but have massive smiles on their faces, and it's easy to know why, nobody gives a fuck about anything. The bloke who rakes the sand at 7am walks around with a bottle of Stag in his hand Quote
Widnes Two Hats Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 It's too hot so I've moved to the shade and thought I'd catch up on life in the real world, so where better than here whilst I drink some cold beer, there only so much one can take in, in a day, tomorrow we are getting a sea plane to Trinidad for the day then Saturday we're off to Barbados for a couple of days so again I say, stick your overpopulated boats up your arse Quote
