As an aside, do you think we don't also cyber attack the Russians and the Chinese as well on occasion? Personally, I'd be a lot more worried about China than Russia I’m not worried about myself but I am for my kids. Nor am I going to change my way of life but that doesn’t mean to say I’m going to waiver in support of our government actions for Ukraine. They need to fully back Zelensky and hope they prevail. If I could go back to the fifties if only for my grandkids I’d do it in a moment. People were kinder, we had communities, we very rarely borrowed just saved up and authorities like the police, teachers, politicians, especially nurses and doctors were respected. We’ve just lost so much of what made us great. Yes you can sneer and think we’re so much better off with our Internet age and borrowing frenzy but you didn’t live it so you can’t know. There will be some oldies who disagree but maybe they had it harder than most of us or have just been brainwashed as the young are these days. Quote

Why is this latest spat more important and worthy of our money than in 2014? A huge error in retrospect and the reason he felt he could attack Ukraine in 2022. We shouldn’t make that mistake again. I’ve no idea but we are far less safe if Putin takes any part of Ukraine. Therefore we should back Zelensky and pray that Russia have to back down. Either way Europe is a far less safe place than it was ten years ago. Quote

I'm not sneering at all, I grew up in the 70s and 80s, so know how society and community has changed - those days have gone and are never coming back though. People are greedy, hence the whole change in attitudes to saving and borrowing. It's only going to get worse as well, as money (borrowed) becomes easier and easier to come by due to the likes of Klarna, Clear Pay and various other credit facilities Quote

Probably, and whilst some will disagree, Russian involvement in Brexit was to try and fragment/destabilise the EU as a block. If Russia is that bad, and are doing all these things we don't like, maybe we should go on the offensive, which may well happen now that Zelensky is allowed to use the longer range stuff Quote

Nor will we be importing workers from there. Any trade deal with America run by Trump will be to favour America and will only hurt us here. Of course you know that too. There is no magical economic growth. We need to restore our trade and increase the numbers of people working here. Nothing else beyond that will make any difference. Inspite of what the left/right wingers might claim. Quote

We also need to look to increase our productivity levels, as it's pretty piss poor, compared to some of our neighbours. Increasing trade, whilst also ditching a free trade agreement with our nearest market is always going to be a bit of a challenge though.... Quote

Agreed but this is almost entirely down to skills and terrible long term approaches to education and lifelong learning. We keep ripping stuff up and starting again and I think that is a uniquely British thing. Quote

Productivity increases require proper infrastructure, social mobility, tech and education. Everything that has been held back by austerity, basically. Quote
frank_spencer Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 Those who love harking back to the good old days are the ones who shout loudest when income tax is increased. In the much beloved 50s and 60s top rate income tax was 90%, before Thatcher it was 80. Her and Major dropped to 40% no wonder theres less money in the government coffers. Quote

I have been hearing for nearly two decades now about the wonders of diversity and inclusion and the UK's embracing of these. You must be wrong. According to some of your recent posts, Poland must be on its knees due to its immigration policies? Quite the opposite ... Far right and all that 🙄 Quote
