Andy Walker

Absolute gem in his time.

Some of his predecessors had qualities- Philiskirk had a wand of a left foot, and I though John Thomas had a good instinct for goal,  but for me he was the first top quality finisher I'd watched in a white shirt.

Cool, sharp, good touch, left or right foot, and even his head.

It's a shame that Michael Ricketts fell foul of his poor attitude, because for a brief while with us he was also top drawer.

Iirc, his stats were better than Walker's (certainly for a while) and both are in the top three.

When you stop to think though we’ve had so many top, top players and servants to the club. Roy Greaves will always be my absolute favourite but for entertainment in so many ways could you see past Frankie Worthy and that goal against Ipswich? If only it had been the winner instead of just a consolation. 🥴

Watch him regularly doing his punditry on Scottish footie and even though he was with us for a relatively short time I remember his incredible goalscoring record for us - something like 2 goals in every 3 games.

He was doing City v Fulham for Sky last week so may be branching south.

Was thinking the other night when the England fans were singing “you’re only here ‘cos it’s England” (ignoring however many consecutive sell outs, but that’s by the by). How many clubs can sing that one about a player and genuinely mean it like we did with ‘come to see Okocha’?

Had to check after reading this and according to that oracle known as Wiki, Walker scored 44 in 67 appearances and Ricketts 37 in 98 - so not as good but still excellent in the scheme of things.

We were lucky to get Walker when we did - just coming into his prime and he came from a Celtic side that were starting to decline, had new ownership and were intent on rebuilding their squad so in that respect they threw the baby out with the bathwater. Plus he had SJM alongside him to help him regain his earlier form and confidence.

Ricketts played and scored at a higher level than Walker.

He could and should have played in the top flight for a long time.  He had all the physical attributes to do so, but clearly not the mental fortitude.

It wasn't a consolidation when he scored. It was either an equaliser or it put us in front.

Also worth considering how often Ricketts started on the bench, too.

Walker was a fantastic watch, a lovely footballer and a cracking fella by all accounts

Ricketts was on another level

seemed like he never missed

some of his goals were unbelievable

he lobbed the keeper at hudds from about 10 yards

and put your mon elliot on his arse at leicester before nearly uprooting the posts

😂

I think my favourite Ricketts memory is also the first. Came on as a sub against Preston at home after his ban was up and just utterly destroyed them. He was such a genuinely good player, even in the Premier League. Those goals he scored at Utd, Arsenal, Tottenham….proper chef’s kiss stuff.

You would put your life savings on Ricketts scoring if he was one on one with the keeper.

That was correct until one day he cocked it up ... & I'm not sure he ever did it again.

I remember the day when Sam brought him on, off the bench, & he just strolled about ignoring the game. The sub was subbed after about 15 minutes. I'm not sure he played for us again.
