Good article, certainly can relate to some of what he's saying there about work colleagues.

so what he is saying

his life got infinitely better when he pretended not to be from bolton, andnow he likes bolton

but tells bolton uni not to change and to stay as they are

not sure it adds up

clearly rebranding worked for him, and it should for bolton uni too

and then when it does, bolton uni can tell everyone how proud they are of there bolton roots, and celebrate them furhter down the line when they've got themselves on track

thats the moral of his story

I read it as, 'I was mistaken in my disowning of my roots and that actually I had more to be proud of than I knew. I learnt from that, I'm suggesting the University of Bolton to proud to herald the Boltonian name rather an nondiscript area and not be like I was.'

Easy to be a cynic, Zico, its tricker to admit perhaps you were wrong and use this lesson on a contemporary topic of relevance.

I’d say it says more about him having a pretty horrific time of it with the bullying due to being gay. That could have been anywhere in the country to be fair & he recognises that. A lad I knew at school who came out was accepted fairly well, but it can just be a lottery depending on your family & school. His ‘rebranding’ sounds more about his own way of coping with the things he went through. Now he likes the place and enjoys going back.

At least that’s my take.

Just goes to show it’s experiences that make a place.

Yup - and also, I do love my hometown but I did spend by whole youth counting down the time until I could leave. Not because I was builled or anything like that but I just wanted to get out into the wider world, see what was out there. everyone is a mutitude of people at different times of their life - many younger people try a reinvention - its part of growing up, and as they get older they appriciate everything they have come from. I know a gay lad who got buillied for being gay at school, left for London a soon as he could, totally disowned Bolton for being 'backward' and 'small-town' but now in his 40s has started to see what there is to love about the place and the people there. I don't blame him for his attuitude in his 20s after the shit time he went through at school.

I do love going back home, it will always be 'home' and couldn't be prouder of being a Boltonian and I agree the uni should keep the Bolton title and fight for what is good about the town

I also couldn't wait to get out, went to uni then moved to manc, staying in touch and visiting regular with family, mates and footy

that said I never pretended not to be from bolton

now I'd move back there in a flash

in any case

the uni probably really to need to rebrand, like most unis, they will be gagging for the rich overseas students and they probably have far more chance of attracting those and others from around the uk by being associated with manchester

I'd totally urge them to do that

it's a business / marketing descsion

there's no room for sentiment

they can be as proud as they like

but they need more students clearly, who've probably never heard of bolton

Spot on.

People need to move on and stop hanging on to a past that only exists in their minds.

The world will move on regardless

Went to uni as was proud to be from Bolton

Could have been in part that in halls I lived with other blokes who supported other teams, so you defend your team and the town

I haven't lived in Bolton for 23 years but I will always be proud of where I'm from

Living down south I get asked where my accent is from and I say Bolton. Even though I lived in Yorkshire for twelve years 😀

Aye

Get them though the door

Once they're here, get Bolton in their faces everywhere they go

Rename the union the Fred Dibnah bar, phoenix nights on the union TV on repeat, carrs pasties on the menu every day, get Vernon to DJ at Freshers week

Can change the name, do all that, still be proud etc

But don't be surprised if the students all piss off to Manchester for a night out

If you've ever told anyone you are from 'near Manchester' to anyone, ever as you are ashamed of your home town you are a disgrace.

Stevieb - lives near Rivington

I've said that many times when I've been working away in America. 9 times out of 10 the next question was "Where's Manchester?" and I'd end up just saying "a few hours North of London", which they'd interpret as me living just outside London. Though to be fair, I've only ever worked in Kansas Missouri, where 90% of the people haven't even seen an ocean in real life.

When I was travelling through China, the border guard guy looked at my passport and said “ah Bolton, Bolton Wanderers” with a big smile. He then said I’d missed my connection and had to wait 10 hours.

When at uni I was known as Bolton Jon

Never asked for it, was just the name I was given

Then went working in Norfolk and again got called Bolton Jon

Did a spell in London and got called the same

My accent goes away when I speak on a day to day basis but put me in Bolton and it comes out

If you can’t use Google Maps then you shouldn’t be going to uni.
