Went to Rochester on Saturday wondering why folk liked the place on the Gillingham trip as its always been a bit shit in my opinion, like most of Medway.

But when you compare it to Bolton town centre it looks positively stunning.

The walk through town, down Bradshawgate and to Travelodge at night is nothing short of scary.

Done that myself several times over the last few months, not pleasant at all.

Gillingham is the least intimidating hovel I’ve ever been too. Such a shithole.

It that the one near shiffnall street?

Yeah that's the one. They've actually done some work down there and built some decent looking apartments and offices opposite the hotel, but the no man's land between there and pretty much Nelson Square after dark is grim as fuck.

It's not great, I won't have a bad word said about Northern Monkey it deserves to be in a far better town centre than it is, but some of the people lurking around that area are fucking rats.

Sadly that there is the real issue. Folk can clammed for millions to be spent on the town, which it needs and I would love to see, but it will the same scrotes frequenting it sadly. It’s a thankless task cleaning it up

It’s a fuckin hole. It’s such a state. If I was a Ukrainian refugee and I got off there I’d get back on the bus.

I do feel like writing to my local MP but it will  be in vain.

I haven't ventured into Town for well over 3 years. It had been about 2 years before that too, only went in for a panto in the town hall with the kids.

It was shit 5 years ago so God knows what it is like now, I might have a wander one Saturday and see for myself.

The place is just too big, huge swathes need sorting out as retail premises aren't viable anymore, there just isn't the footfall.

Middlebrook, Manchester, Trafford Centre, Market Hall, etc... you know the rest.

Agree bury much better. It’s also odd how the general feel of the place is totally different and folk out and about just seem different. Never look around in bury and see smack heads roaming the streets en masse at every turn or pisscans asleep on benches etc.

such a shame what’s happened to the town in general. Used to be an ace place to live

Tessuti is the only one I saw but that was massively out of place

I'm with Marc about the Monkey.

Not been out out in Bolton town centre since about 96, SJM was out in town that night, we had just drawn at home to stoke (conceded very late 1-1) but went on to have a fantastic season.

Town was still ok then.

Early noughties my mother moved to an owd folks complex down the bottom of Daubhill, nipped into town for her a couple of times if she needed a couple of bits and it was getting rough by then.

In a weird way i'd like to go say dead early on a Sunday morning and have a mooch around and maybe video it.

I used to love Bolton nights out right through the 2000s, it was on its arse and crumbling in places but Bradshawgate was banging with loads of places open and clubs. Now there's maybe 4 or 5 places at a push I'd want to go in.

At the time people would say oh its shit now, used to be miles better and I suppose that's exactly what I'm doing now. Maybe there's a whole Bolton scene we're missing out on 🤣

Only been in once but it was decent and an option, attracts a few balloons from what I saw but there's an atmosphere in there at least.

Went in Swan later and, well...

I’ve not been out in Bolton for quite some time but plan to end that hiatus very shortly.

I don’t mind the bars really but I think my view of them is  clouded by nostalgia. I used to go on a monthly pub crawl with my old man around town the same pubs (albeit some name changes) for years.  The last time we ever had a pint together was in the elephant and castle.  So it will always have a place in my heart for that reason

I've spent way too much money in definately maybe recently. Live singers, decent music and good ale. Plus I get to perv on the guy who owns it. Told my mate I was a lovely girl Saturday. Obviously doesn't know me 😬

Maybe the town and area as a whole is too big to have a "Town Centre" , even back in the 80s all the separate areas or manors had their to own scene and lads & girls from other manors often used to go to each others area on certain nights and you got to know the faces from the different nights and on the whole it was happy days. Monday's (Deane), Thursdays (Howich), Saturday (Aquarius), Sunday (last drop) so maybe as people's tastes and circumstances changed, large town centres were not really needed, so they started attracting whatever the opposite of in crowd is.
