They've won 1 of their last 6 games and sit in 20th. The fans are very vocal in wanting a change of manager (no jackett required) and they're bemoaning the style on football on offer.

Score first and the atmosphere will be toxic.

I don,t think Pompey fans do toxic.  Annoyingly supportive, in a happy clappy sort of way.  Like they turn up to sing songs rather than live through the ups and downs of the match that's going on.  Anyway hopefully their need to be up for the Southampton cup game will give them a bit of fatigue or minor injuries, as good a time to play them as any.

They were talking about this on talkshite. Concerns about subbed players having to walk past opposing fans, and not straight to bench like previously.

Used to know a pompey fan

Seemed to suggest the hatred more comes from them rather than from Southampton

Sure there's probably Southampton fans who hate them but the ones more up for it are Portsmouth

Any idea why it is so?

Derby matches are usually tense on both sides.

Lived in Soton for a year and half back in the early 90s. You could chat to them about football and they'd be the most mild mannered, fair enough lot - until the subject of Pompey came up. They'd transform into a bile-spewing rage, bit like the transformation scene in American Werewolf in London. Maybe they've mellowed since 😊

Heard it was something to do with Dockers strikes much like the Wigan and Leigh dislike was apparently to do with miners strike.

Fuck me, them Saints lads in Sheffield Tap were proper winding up for it.

They were saying that all the old school boys would be out for this one.

Everton hate Liverpool more than the other way round, City hate Utd more than other way round, Spurs always hated Arsenal more, may have changed a bit now.  Smaller club mentality.

Really, the bile and vitriol I see plastics from the 'istree clubs spouting at Citeh is unreal. Grown "men" in replica shirts (have to have latest with a name and correct badges to prove what a fan they are) snarling in the face of kids who dare wear the shirt of the most attractive football team the country has ever seen  at football training and in pubs .

Challenge them on why the support Liverpool and it's all 'istree mate. Ask where Littlewoods FC were before the Moore's used pools money to financially dope Div 2 Liverpool to Europe and not a clue

An acid test of how much fans want to win a particular game for me is whether they would sacrifice a different game for it.  If Everton could beat Liverpool they would take a defeat against anyone else a few days later and call it a great week.  If Liv beat EFC but lose to either Man U or Man C they'd probably say that was a bad week.  Clearly if Pompey had beaten Saints and lost to us it would still be a good week for them.  Some talk about when we play PNE its a derby but we all know its just another game to us and them, no priority with it at all other than getting a bigger crowd on.  A bit different for Blackburn for me, but not Blackpool.  Media like to build up derby rivalry but only the fans know when its real.

The Spurs issue goes back to football resuming after the First World War.

The First Division was extended from 20 clubs to 22. In the last season before the war Spurs finished 20th and were relegated. 19th placed Chelsea were elected to one of the 2 extra places. Derby and PNE were promoted in the normal way, and Arsenal were elected to the last spare place despite having finished 6th in the Second Division.

Is it not more likely that they are neighbours and spurs are historically not as good?

The hate is always greater in the weaker rival

The closeness is obviously a factor. But the fact that Arsenal got a promotion they had not earned, while Spurs were relegated despite the division being expanded, was the root cause. (They then won the Second Division by a big margin.)
