Didn’t get to see my grandma last Christmas, broke my heart and ruined my day that she had to have it alone, If there’s a new variant or still the old one knocking about I’m going to make sure I do everything I can to make sure she’s safe to spend Christmas with us.

If I have to wear a mask down Tesco then I will. People spend more time moaning about it than the time it would take to pop one on do their shopping and get home.

My Nana made us go round. At 90 she said she'd rather see us for one last Christmas as obviously time isn't on her side. Can't argue with someone for saying that at her age. People do their own thing.

I've swayed with my views over the last couple of years. I havent got a fucking clue anymore in all honesty. One thing is for sure I wouldn't ram my opinion down anyones neck.

I'll never forget last year when I was in Morrisons and a bloke walked in with his little kid.  As the bloke was putting his mask on his son asked him why he was putting it on and his answer was "Because people give you dirty looks if you don't wear one".

Great attitude to pass onto your kid, mate,

Of all people with you being a nurse  I would have imagined you would be for it especially after the last two years.
In a position now where we don’t know how transmissible this variant is. The scientists and powers that be seem to be concerned.

But hey ho

If I've had covid and recovered do I have to wear a mask or can I go about life with an air of superior invincibility only the triple jabbed can previously enjoy?

I'm triple jabbed and I'll be wearing a mask in shops.

"Ramming it down our throats" is the new go-to phrase for when someone has a view/opinion on something that I don't want to listen to.

See kneeling before kick off as an example.  "Having ant-racism rammed down our throats."

We're now being told by the health chief "don't socialise before Christmas unless you need to"...

Just bring this one back up.

The same Julia Hartley Brewer that was explaining why masks don't work, as the pore size is greater than that of a virus. You like your facts (your point above about comparing deaths and week 39 etc is valid, and isn't the best use if data) however when she comes out with selective data comments herself, then credibility disappears.

Put simply, basic masks do offer a degree of protection by means of trapping droplets emitted as we breathe, sneeze or cough etc. They are not perfect by any means, but provide a cheap, easy method of control that we can all do.

There are numerous studies on this, and apparently the bma has some sort of review of them available.

I didn't have any issues with masks last time I'll be honest. Wore one in shops until I was told I didn't need to.

5 mins in aldi. Not an issue.

If I was commuting on the train or tube regularly it would have been more of an issue.

The JHB point is less about masks now and more about jennie harries this morning saying don't socialise unless you have to a day after 500 or so MPs had a massive piss up and jolly boys meal in one big room.

But you definitely shouldn't go for pints with colleagues this Christmas. Ethal is counting on you.

Idiots. My volcano isn’t big enough. Might have to start launching them Into orbit.

Orbit, what am I saying no orbiting a flat earth.

I saw a Haries interview myself, and she didn't say that, so perhaps it was on a different channel, they tend to do several one after the other.

Also remember she works for the nhs, not directly in government, and her particularly view, isn't necessarily adopted as policy. Though it might be.

Seems a total over reaction to the new South African variant. Its being reported, that not one case of the new variant has been admitted to hospital. But mask wearing should never have been dropped in the Uk, many thousand of delta variant cases would have been avoided.

Absolutely. Before covid, they were commonplace in the Far East. Regularly see Japanese folk out and about with them on. I used to wonder if there was something specific requiring them to do it, but it seems it was just a cultural thing they developed in response to other respiratory infections.

"Screeching" as well, if somebody says something that you don't like or agree with, you have to accuse them of screeching.

Correct, I used to go to various offices and factories, and probably around 50% of people always seemed to be wearing masks, even when sat at their desk/work station. I've asked a few why they do it, and they've pretty much said "to stay healthy" and it seems it's just personal choice.

I suspect, in a few years, when this all goes away, you'll still see a lot of people wearing masks, certainly on public transport

Probably true.

But again you miss the point. Folk were largely fucking them off any way, as during the summer, cases were relatively low and hospitalisations manageable.

If a rule is pushed too far, then it's hard to get it to stick upon reintroduction. Societies differ, and it appears we have one less compliant than many. Blame folk as much as authorities.

You once again ignore the suggestion that has been made, that by easing restrictions and getting jabs done early, then large spikes that might be seem in the winter won't occur to the same extent.

This is now being borne out in Europe, and underlines the need for boosters here.

When I went to China almost everyone had one on, I got told it was part protecting against illnesses the other one was pollution. I saw what they meant about pollution it was like a thick smog. About 4 days with no mask I started to feel heavy chested. Chap at the hotel told me to use a face covering when outside in the city. It worked. Sheeples.

Or, alternatively a bit of cloth might just help old Ethal see out this winter.

Don't see the issue myself.

Old Ethal will get it eventually. Everyone will.

(Not advocating not wearing one btw)

More too it than that. It's the pompous, self righteousness associated with mps, who sometimes go puce in their protestations over a given issue.

I coined it on here, in response to Anna Soubry, who's head appeared likely to explode during a parliamentary rant, scattering gammon like flesh across the benches.

It is perfectly possible to have an opposing view without screeching.

I see mask wearing has helped China

😁

Here's a systematic review and meta analysis of global research into whether wearing face masks is a good idea in preventing transmission of COVID published on the 18th November this year.

TLDR - The answer is yes......

That's the one I was talking about.

Will read it later- I'm off pruning now. :)

My lad and his g/f are currently in Thailand and will need to self isolate on return until they get the results of a PCR test. As I’ll be picking them up from T2 am I then at risk?

They’ve not made it too clear.
