meanderson93 Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 I loved it, thought it was a great advert for Test Cricket and exactly what the style England are playing is trying to achieve in terms of entertainment. The declaration for me had little to do with it, sure we may have seen Australia bat out to a dull draw, but not sure anyone wants to sit watching that. Think some changes could definitely be made selection wise for the next one though, I think dropping Foakes was always a mistake, as well as hoping Moeen could hold up an end in a test despite not playing red ball for two years. I'd expect they will be heavily debating getting Wood in as well, just for some more variation from the pace attack as the three we had this match all came with similar plans and lines. Quote
Tonge moor green jacket Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 This was hardly England's first eleven. Unfortunately, I can't see our seriously quick bowler-Archer-playing test cricket again. Moeen was a gamble, and he did OK, but a stop-gap only surely? I can also see the potential for Bairstow opening and Foakes playing as well. Quote

That would have always been my preference personally, having Bairstow come in and being a part of that opening partnership, leaving Foakes as the more than capable keeper and batting at 7. But I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out Bairstow had a whinge about a scenario like that, he's got previous for having a paddy when he's not been given the gloves. Quote
DazBob Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 Who is being dropped to accommodate both Bairstow and Foakes? Quote

I can only think people are thinking Ducket or Crawley - but I’m not so sure. While I get the argument for Foakes’ inclusion, I’m not sure about him replacing either of those 2 or Bairstow. That said, I’m sure it will be a consideration that the management are discussing. But I think Wood coming in, resting Anderson and replacing Moen, will be the key considerations. Quote

The obvious answer would be crawley but of the 2, im think duckett has at least as much to prove Anyway, you then potentially hurt bairstows batting, which would be crackers Bairstow keeps the gloves for me Quote

Saw a suggested lineup on Twitter that I wouldn't mind seeing us go for which included dropping Pope, not sure that's be the move as I believe he's a vice captain but based on form is understandable. Crawley, Duckett, Brook, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Foakes (wk), Dawson, Wood, Robinson, Broad Quote

Smiley Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 Interesting that nobody is considering Jos Buttler in any of this. Imagine his batting style in this team where he no longer has to prod about and pretend to play “olde worlde” test cricket. I’d pay good money to see that. Oh, and he can keep wicket whilst he’s at it. Quote
L/H White Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 what's happed to archer btw, can't say i follow cricket to much bar the ashes, but he seems to have fallen off a cliff Quote

Marc505 Posted June 21, 2023 Posted June 21, 2023 I'm more of a casual follower too, though I do watch many of the test series, so this might be a bit of a naive question but did anyone else find the sweary football style chanting a bit out of order? The "your support is fucking shit" etc? I'm not against the raucous atmosphere and it's great so many want to actually go and watch now but partly kind of watch it for a bit of a break from the football "edge"! Quote

Casino Posted June 21, 2023 Author Posted June 21, 2023 And without the football influx paying football money, the crowds wouldnt be what they are, tbf Ashes aside Quote

Well he bowled 33 overs in the 1st Innings, 40 total spin overs with Root. And then 15 in the 2nd, 31 total with Root. Both innings were more than Lyon was asked to do for Australia. It's sort of the minimum expectation of a spin bowler in test cricket to bowl for long periods in support of the pace attack, he was never going to be capable of doing that, making his selection a mistake in my opinion. Sky money too. No doubt it has become an opportunity to extent the footy season though for some. Marc is spot on, watching the videos from boby the barmy army seem able to moderate the language/behaviour which footy lads can't. Quote
BobyBrno Posted June 22, 2023 Posted June 22, 2023 The Hollies Stand has always been like that. I was in there for the last Ashes series. Managed to find a seat in another section though as it was too much for me. Different atmosphere at the other Test grounds, even Yorkshire😉 Quote
BobyBrno Posted June 22, 2023 Posted June 22, 2023 Anyway. The convict song, sung at all grounds (apart from Lords)😊 Quote
BobyBrno Posted June 22, 2023 Posted June 22, 2023 Just been looking at the ICC player rankings. Joe Root now No. 1 batter in the world. In the batting list, we have 1 in the top ten, the Aussies have 4. In the bowling, we have 3, the Aussies 2. If cricket was played on a computer, the Aussies would edge it all the time. Luckily it’s played on grass but the toss of a coin before the match even starts could determine the outcome. That’s cricket. Quote

Aye and its only fair to consider our test record before 'bazball' Theres a clear suggestion from some negative twats that its a choice between winning dour cricket and losing expansive cricket Quote
