With the money we’ve spent we should be aiming for automatic promotion and at the very least top 6….I want SS to be that man,  with our current form you’d be mad to get rid…. At the time I questioned if he was the right man for the job we were poor and he looked like he did not know how to change it… so it was inevitable some of us weren’t happy with him.

I don’t think many were especially happy at that point, but most wanted to wait and see. I don’t think we’ve got a particularly high net spend though - we received decent money for some of the players we sold especially George, we got a lot off the payroll and replaced them with loaners so overall there’s not been massive new investment in the squad as far as I can see, but I may be wrong.

Right now I’m undecided, but we’ll see how the window pans out and if the revitalised team is up to it soon enough. One victory at a time.

Schumacher/Harkin brought in 400k in transfer fees than he shelled out in the first window and is 600k to the good as of today in this window;  I am with you on him playing the same system [ie two wingers] especially away, and this needed to be changed. He went two wingers again yesterday with Mcatee playing more the ten role. I Schumacher is having his hands tied playing this way because at present we do not have two up top he trusts. If he brings a forward [Hardie] in he will play in front of Dalby and i am sure two wingers away will be a thing of the past.  He clearly wanted to bring more in last summer but his hands were tied with most of the players under contract.

Anything this season was always going to be a bonus. The fact the league is more even maybe got us more points than i thought we may get. We are right up there now so we need to have a good go, but next season was always the season where i was going to judge him

Piphead used to post but it all went a bit pear-shaped.

Have any of you folks that said he should go changed your mind in the last 3 weeks? Or shifted to “see where we are at the end of the season?”

No shame involved here, we were shit and spiralling. He's done an admirable job steering us through a difficult period, but we're still a way off from it being job done.

I've nothing against SS at all, it's entirely results based. Keep winning or be under pressure is the reality of being at a club looking/needing to get promoted.

I always go back to a game last season, I want to say it was Leyton Orient at home but I might be wrong and I can’t be arsed googling it.

We started 352, went 1-0 down. Changed to 433, got 2-1 up, went to 532 to see the game out. After the persistence and lack of adaptability from Evatt, SS seemed like a breath of fresh air.

Then this season up until before the Wigan game, we’d been so wed to this 4231, play it out from the back borderline Evatt ball that I was beginning to think SS was devoid of ideas. I don’t think there’s been that many convincing performances in the first half of the season so add in the downturn in results, it’s hardly surprising that the idea of trying to salvage the season under fresh ideas might’ve sounded an appealing prospect.

Very happy to eat humble pie if SS achieves the objective though 🤷‍♂️

Since this poll, we've beaten Wigan, Burton, Orient and Wimbledon. All who are currently placed between 17th-21st in the table.

In this time we've lost at home to the bottom of the league and scored 6 goals in 5 games.

SS hasn't coached a player to any evident improvement and all our loanees have got worse since being with us.

I wouldn't say its the greatest case of 'I told you so'. Not to mention it's the bleakest football I've ever seen a Bolton team play.

I'd say Feb should be a tougher test but with the exception of Lincoln, it shouldn't be really. The league is absolutely crap this year.

Although there should be praise where praise is due for our recent form, I do think a bit of perspective is needed.

Lets see where we are come the end of the season.

I agree with the sentiment - we’ve beaten teams that we should have done. The 13 points in 5 is impressive, but it was in line with expected results.

However, just because it would be expected on paper - it’s another thing to go and do it, and to have done it with 3 away clean sheets and variation in formation is all the more impressive.

Bleakest football you’ve ever seen a Bolton team play… you’ve got to be kidding?

Very fair.

Recency bias in play, granted. I can't remember a team less interesting to watch in my 25 or so years of watching us. It's properly boring from back to front.

I reckon that makes you around my age, possibly a year or two younger.

Granted it’s hardly been free-flowing edge of the seat, champagne football but:

- Freedman controlling the game without the ball

- The latter part of Lennon’s reign

- Parky for the most part, even when we were winning promotion we were dire to watch. Our centre backs scored from corners but we basically lumped it to le fondre

- Keith Hill and his onions. To be fair to him we had an absolute disaster of a team

- The last season of Evatt. We just went sideways and sideways and sideways and sideways.

Time often makes things seem better than they were. It’s also completely reasonable that you have your own opinion on the quality of football for each of those - I just find it mad that we can both have such a different opinion when we’ve watched the same thing for the same proportion of our lives.

And no mention of Megson!

I know nostalgia takes over but my memories of some of these are very different (not saying mine are right).

- Freedman, I honestly have very little recollection of this era, which probably proves your point.

- Lennon, I remember us getting a bit of bite back into our team, bringing players like Clough through.

- Parky makes me think of us have a physical team but with players like ALF, Morais, Vela, etc. Had some unbelievable away days during this time, not to mention the Wilbraham goal (good times).

- Keith Hill doesn't count.

- We generally played some fantastic stuff under Evatt, it just got very stale and he overstayed him welcome. Think how we played in the PJC final.

- Megson just makes me think of Bayern Munich away and just generally playing prem football, would take a real cynic to look past that.

It's probably just me but I find myself completely disengaged with this SS team.

I know one swallow makes neither a summer nor a porn star, but the pace of the counter attack for the goal on Saturday has given me fresh hope of a quicker style going forward
