This is an opinion of a fellow pilot I've just read:

It would seem that the crew was massively struggling with the aircraft. The general plan seems to have been to get onto the ILS11 at Aktau, and very sensibly so. Oscillations about the localizer and massive difficulties in maintaining any sort of a glide followed and the first approach then seems to have been aborted. The official missed approach procedure would be to climb straight ahead 1800´ for vectors, but then in the attempt to rejoin the approach, control was lost in the way shown on the videos.

A missile that hit the aircraft somewhere over the Russian Caucasus would indeed be a believable explanation as it would not only explain the shrapnel damage but also the massively reduced controllability of the aircraft thereafter. It does strongly reek of MH17 Mk. 2 if so.

If so, I will take the opportunity to bow to the flight crew that managed to get the aircraft that far and ensured that at least a few of their passengers survived. They got dealt a rather nasty hand that day and made the best of it.

I'm taking my hat off to the guys... having a ordinary working day then flew into GPS and Beacon jamming and then got hit in the arse by a SAM... and STILL Managed to fly across the Caspian Sea with a shot out elevator

Death toll now 127 and rising. Awful tragedy.

I’m no aviation expert (like @Marc505) but the video looks like the landing gear isn’t working. I can’t see the front wheel and it seems to be skidding rather than on its rear wheels. If that’s the case, the pilots would have little control over (a) slowing it down and (b) directing it once on the ground.

There is mention of a bird strike, but also it looks like mechanical issues to me.

Another one in South Korea.

Video below for the voyeurs.

At time of writing 28 dead, 3 survivors.

Surreal

Heard about the mayday call after a birdstrike but coming in so hot and fast with no flaps and gear makes zero sense, it almost looks like an attempt to go around after realising the wheels weren't there...  he was always going to run out of runway and hit something but which idiot put a wall there?

The Koreans have a terrible safety record, I have heard it is all about the cultural master and servant mentality of the crews

If The WALL wasn’t there it would still be travelling now, judging by its speed.
A very strange incident.

Doesn’t make sense about the landing gear. They have the ability to sort it manually and it’s a gravity system, so unless they’re upside down it’ll always work.

Pilot who does loads of videos about crashes says he can’t figure it out at all, and he knows his shit

If the bird strike was on final approach and caused some sort of engine/power failure, then maybe there was no time to manually drop the gear?

Pilot did report an emergency, supposedly about a bird strike.

Lots of unknowns at the moment, so leave them to do the investigation.

Ok

I’ll leave them to it.

I'm waiting for @Marc505to file his report.

We’re leaving the Koreans to do their investigation.

Any speculation on a football forum could interfere with the process.

Just leave it.

Kinell, reads like you've spit your dummy out.

A simple post that you've taken to heart?

Your dog hasn't died has it?

Been discussing this with the boys (a few Boeing drivers in the room) at the local airfield this morning, I think most will be surprised to find the gear selector in the down position when the remains are examined.

So there you are, all configured and stable, perfect weather with runway in sight and BANG... and the cabin fills with smoke and maybe the smell of burning oil (damaged engine driving the air conditioning). Then hopefully, your training kicks in including those Amygdala "startle and surprise" lessons when you did your exams and you remember... "flightpath under control". If not, you might hit a wall at 150mph.

I had a birdstrike landing a single engine plane once and the shock shits you up somewhat... but you need to keep on it.
