Its not good at all that in the final tournament you have to try really hard to not go through to the next round, but fair play to the likes of Northern Ireland - the way they played in their group theyd have gone through regardless of the format. I'm sure they will as the standard will be shite as its spread over 6 groups, there just isn't enough decent teams in Europe to warrant 24 teams. It will end up like the champions league were the group stage is a bit shit and it's all about the knock outs I'm going over there and have tickets for group games in Nice & Bordeaux - God forbid I get Slovenia v Ukraine or the like With 3 out of 4 teams getting out of most groups it's killed the early competition, many teams will be guaranteed to be through after one game. Many of the final group games will be dead rubbers as the two teams playing settle for a draw so both go through If they wanted to expand the tournament then they might as well have had 32 teams in like the WC, the teams wouldn't have been a great deal worse but at least the integrity of the groups would have been in place with only 2 going through Quote

After all, if every team in a group has one win, one draw and one loss, they all get 4 points. There is a real problem that a tough group may see a 'good' third fail to qualify, but 'poor' thirds may do so. Quote
