frank_spencer Posted January 20 Posted January 20 When hammered in my Coventry student days I apparently shouted at the chippy man that "where I'm from a faggot batch is a crate full of gay men!" Got gently escorted away by my apologetic mates. Quote

The fish looked awesome big and well crispy batter, unfortunately they were always full of skin & bones, Shite! In my survey of the fish & chip shops of England ( Whitby best, Whitehaven2nd, surprisingly Uddersfield 3rd, with honourable mention for Yorkshire Fisheries in Blackpool ) I don't think i've found any decent fish & chips south of Birmingham......like you say, loads of bones & a thick layer of black skin. My local chippy is really good. The fish as good as I've had anywhere, certainly no bones or skin involved. Chips are really good as well. The only let down is they don't do either gravy or rag pudding. Quote
Not in Crawley Posted January 20 Posted January 20 There's the occasional ok one down south but they arent a patch on Northern or Scottish chippies. They are just shit at making chips taste nice. Fish are generally ok. Quote

It's an expensive do going to the chippy these days, I think a large cod at my local one is £9.50 now. So large fish and chips coming in at around £14 Quote

But then again id never eat a large cod and chips so me and the mrs share one and then the girls seem to be happy with the kids meals as you still get loads of chips. I really fancy a chippy tea now! Leyther_Matt Posted January 20 Posted January 20 Was almost tempted to try the chippy on Stevenage High St just now but it just didn’t spell appealing. Not doing it right at all. This was my local growing up: https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/whats-on-news/inside-terraced-house-theres-fish-33184814.amp Quote

My Mrs. Goes to our local chippy in Farnworth and always asks me and I ask for a chip barm. She comes out with chips and peas and always, I mean always says I fancied a fish but they’re too big for me. Used to tell her she should have got one and we could have shared it but I don’t even bother now. Out of sight out of mind. Quote

Heck some of the shit me and my Nigerian housemates said to each other would have us cancelled straight away. One time the poor cleaner heard us and thought it was serious, never seen bins emptied so quickly. Quote

Yorkshire Fisheries very good. Our most local one, Kays, next to Cleveleys Bus Station always decent. As you'd expect, we're not short of choice on the Fylde Coast. Before I moved over and was living in Royton, near Oldham, we had a brilliant one in Shaw called Armstrong's, home of the 'Jumbo Cod'. It was huge, wrapped up it was like leaving with a roll of wallpaper. Quote

Not in Crawley Posted January 22 Posted January 22 The chippy next to the festival theatre in Edinburgh is my favourite, then Bennets Lane. Love a bit of Salt and Sauce or whatever the Scots call it. Quote

Seen it as I’ve cycled past but usually stop at Bispham Kitchen I’ve heard of Armstrongs. Not far from here. Will try that place as well Quote

Saw me through many a school lunch that did at Smithills. Used to drive over from Turton School when I was at sixth form there for a chip barm with gravy. I still get misty eyed about Smithills Coaching House. Food was never that great but sad it closed, even sadder it was sold for private housing. Quote

Bellamy's is another good one in Bispham, further down Red Bank Rd on left, opposite Sainsbury's Quote

Wee bit cheaper than the Bispham Kitchen and better for me. We use Seniors at Marsh Mill Mostly. Belting. Quote

Honestly, you didnt want to touch that cheese board. I remember playing football with the Edam in the kitchen before slicing up and putting out. Was ropey, but still liked the place. Quote
