It is just that these huge abattoirs they have over there can process live and dead chickens much quicker because all germs are killed at this final wash. The only difference is that we can now pick the traits we want to keep instead of spending decades hoping we'll get the changes we want randomly. It's another subject where misinformation and scientific illiteracy rule the roost - just like vaccination - as you rightly point out. GMO's are likely to be one of the only ways we'll have a chance to feed an ever increasing population as climate change begins to affect crop yields. It's either that or insects. Take your pick!
