3 people posting the BBC link.

I've read that.

Climate... Parts of Australia are in the strictest of lockdown and have been for 200+ days

Anyone based in Africa that can give us first hand accounts of what lockdown measures look like, how they are being adhered to etc?

Anyone got JJ or Quinton Fortunes number?

It's only Victoria that has struggled with Covid, the coldest mainland state with the least sunshine. The lockdown has meant Melbourne folk only allowed out for 1hr/day so that fucks Vit D levels I imagine.

Winters aren't that bad but poor building quality means heating systems get used more which I think lowers humidity and that means wildly contagious for Covid.

Victoria also fucked up due to a failure in hotel quarantine when they employed anyone with a pulse, plenty of whom cared not one fuck about virus transmission. And they probably acted too late once the 2nd wave hit. The first wave hit in March and April when temps very benign.

Melbourne has had a pretty restrictive lockdown since April and unsurprisingly folk are getting very pissed off with it now.

Pretty sure exeter is near the top of the infection league

Happy to be shown otherwise but if not, why arent they tier 2?

Without looking up the figures vast majority of cases are in a couple of student halls of residence,  which are in complete lockdown.  Lower than national average in general population.

An impossible situation for any government. Just listened to radio four and their brief review of European approaches to it all.

Dutch did very well before, and now hints of a full lockdown. Similar in Belgium.

Rutter concerned he will be voted out in next year's election on the back of it.

German rates rapidly going up too.

We need some vaccines ASAP.

German case aren't going up rapidly. They have bounced around between 3000 to 5000 a day. Yesterday was lower than several days earlier as an example. Radio 4 has a long history of just going along with what the UK Government tells them. It's a bit like Hancock coming out with the bullshit about how many Countries are asking about our amazing Track and trace system. It's embarrassing. 12 Billion for something that doesn't work properly. No Country in their right mind is going to follow the UKs example on this. We have completely fucked it. I haven't seen a single person without a Mask over here in any Shop. In the UK you have Morons bragging about not wearing Masks in the Shops, posting selfies on Facebook and Twitter likes it's a badge of honour, and nothing gets done about it.

When you take the case of the Netherlands they really didn't do great first time round with regards to deaths per million, but it was better than the surrounding Countries. what they did do was to look out for their people. I have a mate at KLM who was away from work for Months because the Airline completely stopped flying (except some Cargo Flights) for a while. He got 100% of his pay, 90% paid by the Government, 10% by KLM. My son works for Lufthansa Cityline over here. Whilst not working he got 90% of his pay. The fact he didn't have to travel to work five days a week meant he was effectively not losing any Money.

Belgium is worrying, and running similar to the UK both in cases per million and deaths per million at this moment, but was in fact a lot worse first time around.

I see the scousers are taking it seriously.

We should put a dome over Merseyside, or cut around it and push it into the sea

Just treat it like a wasps nest.

Inhumane removal for me

But it’s why lockdowns shouldn’t happen in two or three days time. when they decide they should shut it down. Stops it from Happening

I went for a few pints last Thursday before the pubs shut up here but the pubs weren’t even busy for a Thursday it was was just a normal night.

You need to give businesses some notice

Think of all the wastage if you just shut them down immediately

Restaurants would be chucking thousands of pounds worth of f stuff in the bin with no way of recovering those costs

I get that. Surely we could compensate that rather than have the public health issues that arise from spending like last night? It would be a drop in the ocean compared to what we’ve spent so far and worth it.

Prefer my push them into sea idea. We’ll make a day of it.

Circuit Breakers happening in Northern Ireland, possibly Wales, I wonder if we will follow or not?

Meanwhile in New Zealand - no cases in the community for 18 consecutive days - 6 deaths in 6 months, folk filling up sports stadiums, everyone going to work and school, folk getting their medical operations sorted.

6 weeks of restrictions since the begining of June.

This is what a zero tolerance, early reaction policy is looking like at the moment. Theyve had outbreaks and quashed them every time, as I'm sure they will continue to do.

We could have done this in Summer, a few more weeks lockdown, no international holidaying, proper policing of quarantines, attacking the remaining cases, but we didn't.

They have the advantage of being an island, and have effectively "Hibernated" their population quickly as soon as they've been able.

I'm not giving up on this.

Yep , they definately had an advantage at the start

We got down to averages of 550 cases a day and less than 10 deaths a day in July - most of which was in the North, comparable to what NZ had, when adjusted for population -

I was bumbling on about it back in summer -

If we'd gone hard in the North for a bit longer, a few more weeks of the initial lockdown, stopped folk from holidaying abroad, quarnatined every incoming person, we could have had a go at this too.

When you have low cases its easier to squash, you don't need as many tests, you don't need as many tracers, you dont need as many quarantining,   lockdowns dont drag on for as long, ultimately, so you can do it better, faster.

I'd much rather be in New Zealand for the next 6 months.
