Oh aye I forgot - skint people aren't allowed to; gamble, socialise, smoke, eat owt but gruel, drink booze, have a big telly, have Netflix, a mobile phone or go to gigs/football etc etc.

I suppose if you were stuck in a dead-end minimum wage job you'd adhere to the above golden (faux lizzy duke gold) rule?

They could just go to a different one?

Tomski mate.  I can usually get anything between £2m and £2.5bn for a legit reason.

25 more years of beer and watching the Wanderers probably won't get through.  Sorry pal!

Haha good man. Hope you are well?

Admittedly there are the odd '£2/£2.50 a pint all day everyday' pubs knocking about, but said pints are usually piss like Fosters or Carling.

Much as I dislike the c*nt one must admit you can get a decent pint for under £3 in his places, also the food is relatively inoffensive and won't break the bank.

My point really was the same folk who exploited workwise by these fuckers are usually amongst those who have limited choice of where they spend their slim wagepackets - it's almost a feudal/tithe type state of affairs.

Get where you're coming from there, genuinely. Not sure ale should be top priority if you're that strapped though: get a decent steak for the price of 3 pints.

Distillation of hand sanitizer with a length of plastic tube, ice cubes and a candle flame could be the way forward.

Having been one of the working poor many moons ago, salt to the wound being me and the ex were amongst the handful of those working/studying on the entire estate, I can confirm even when you're skint, sometimes you just want to sit in a pub and forget your circumstances once in a while - even a fillet steak sat in the house/garden (again) wouldn't sway one from the pub.

She was a pain in the arse finicky eater veggie anyway - which practically made me one...

I did enjoy a tasty burger though, failing that a 'spoons £4 burger and chips and a pint would do...

Our way out of penury wasn't knocking up hand sanitiser, she finished her studies in a half-arsed way, I paused mine (for four years 😐) and we both got better jobs, bought a house and promptly split up - best thing that ever happened to me.

Little Town near me has one. 2.59 for a pint of tennents. 200 yards away a really nice local boozer for football etc with a decent beer garden they’re £3.95 for The same pint. It’s a huge difference really all things considered

i will happily drink in both depending on what I’m doing and fancy.

City centre it can be as much as £2 difference on a pint

Does anybody actually choose to frequent a 'Spoons anyway, other than on a football away day, if there are other proper pubs around?

It depends on what choices you've got.

I'm not a fan of 'Spoons, but they do often have some decent ales on at reasonable prices.

What's a 'proper' pub anyway? Is a Brewdog one? Is Hogarths? The Spinning Mule has a far better selection of ale than Hogarths if that's a 'proper pub' criteria...

To me a 'proper' pub; sells pickled eggs, has a pool table and a dartboard, has a bog that stinks of urinal cakes, a cardboard peanut dispenser with a scantily clad girl behind the bags, a charity giant whisky bottle filled with change behind the bar, still smells of pipe smoke twelve years after the smoking ban and many other attributes. You'd be hard pressed to find many of them these days...Sweet Green Tavern is maybe closest in Bolton Town Centre at least, not been in The Shakespeare in Farnworth for twenty years but can't imagine that's changed much either.

Any more?

Yeah - near work, the one in Kings cross station - it’s the cheapest pint for miles around

I get the price thing, in the town where I live, they're not massively cheaper than a couple of the other local more traditional real ale pubs - maybe 50p/75p difference a pint. At that sort of difference I'm happy to go to the pub that isn't the Wetherspoons, as I don't want them to close down. I do appreciate that pricing is a valid argument, especially in city or big town centres

My local (Bank Top Tap) charges about £2.60 for a pint of ale. Lager and cider on the other hand is quite expensive but that's to keep the riff raf out

It’s just in central London it’s so expensive - but actually the one in kings cross is more expensive than say the one near my house, but when your office is surrounded by places like German Gymnasium or The Lighterman, it makes a big difference when you pop in after work for a beer before heading home.

The problem I have with them is no matter where I am I feel like I’m supping in Nelson   Square which as great as that is deems it pointless going anywhere when I could just stay local.

Yep, I know what you mean.

Internally, they’re very samey.

TBF, they usually do a good job in preserving and reinstating some of the older buildings.

Top bull, Bury Road.

No pickled eggs, and ciggy smoke smell has gone, but the rest is pretty much the same.

A few of us did the todmorden JDW this season

That's just a proper pub, with cheap beer

I'm no JDW  fan, but that's a good pub

I've also been in the Elephant n Castle JDW on an away and that is the ultimate shithole

Could it be argued you’d be more easily pleased in Todmorden as it’s full of weirdos though hehe
