I suspect (but who knows anymore as it seems he's blown um) that Putin has calculated everything to happen up to but not past the point where he has to take on NATO. A NATO v Russia conflict would be close at first but in the end "we" would prevail and overcome them, absolutely annihilate them in the air, and both sides know this.

Been surprised how many high profile people have been suggesting NATO needs to involve itself militarily. David Davis seems to be the most recent.

My suspicion based on nothing is that Putin will be seeking to use this situation as leverage for something down the line, to put him in a stronger negotiating position. Basically saying "we don't fuck about".

If not and he's gone full Hitler mode then I'm not sure how it plays out, air, land and sea are one thing but it all pales in comparison when nukes are involved. Not to mention what happens if China & Russia formed an alliance.

Don't think it's in anyones interest for things to escalate to that level but I'll never underestimate human greed and stupidity.
