That's all down to interpretation.

He's being incoherent. Started with Petulant - now claiming it wasn't excessive force. If it was a petulant come-back rather than a genuine attempt to win the ball (and that is clearly the case) - then any level of force was excessive. There's no acceptable level of kicking someone because you feel like it, and in this case he went in with both feet off the ground doing it.

I haven't seen it, but I'm thinking of Beckham in the world cup.

Clearly petulant, barely touched the lad and got sent off.
