Crossing over with the other thread, but I posted to Stig before I’d even read the quotes Gonzo’s put up.

I now agree that this idealistic way of playing won’t work because the way we play needs clarity of thought, belief, strong minds and confidence, all of which are in very short supply at the moment.

Evatt isn’t going to play the way other L1 teams have got out of this division.

Up until Huddersfield I’d backed Evatt to turn it round.

I thought there was genuine (not deluded/happy clapper) reasoning, which I won’t go into detail on, but in summary, around our previous progression, effective way of playing, new signings given a chance, re-set in training during international break etc, to believe that we could go again and get on a good run.

But it’s too far gone for me now. The triple header of the result/performance, Evatts interview after and the scapegoating farce that’s ensued makes it near-on impossible to  recover.

Hope I’m wrong.

He would get more respect if he swallowed some pride and went back to basics and said you know what it ain’t working.

like I said other day I genuinely think we will win Saturday but going forward this ain’t going to work

They all still think we're the best team in the league don't they, like they have for the last 3 seasons. Despite everything that's gone on, deep down they still think we're this superior team battling against anti-football forces.

It’s like one of those Science experiments, where if you create all the right conditions, you get a fantastic result.

If you got them in an an empty stadium again with Evatt and Gilo telling them how good they are as they demonstrate these intricate plays and be confident enough to wait for the 20th pass sideways followed by an overlapping run and precise ball forwards, which will cause combustion in the oppositions defensive, then bingo it all explodes into action… then they might have a chance of believing how good they are again.

Been a long time since we’ve been on the same page regarding what happens under Evatt, but I have to agree. Despite our poor form and problems, we’ll beat Reading but it will take a hell of a lot more than that to turn this around!

Are these Thomason quotes rehashed from Saturday post match that the BN is still dragging out into Thursday?

Re and re-read and looked on twitter and can’t make it out.

It looks like all Tomo.

@gonzo - where/who’s it come from?

It's all Tomo in the BN this morning. Whether it's a new interview or rehash of the previous one I don't know. Not great reading either way

Sounds like a load of convoluted Poundshop Pep waffle. No wonder they don't look like they know what they're doing. They struggle to put it into words never mind practice

Our Players should all be banned from doing pre match interviews until further notice. Do your talking on the pitch.

If it’s post Huddersfield it’s shocking from BEN

Ive heard before that articles and podcasts get way more hits when things are going badly to when we're doing well. He knows what he's doing dragging the same interview out over a week

Why will we beat Reading though? Don’t you think you may be being a little bit like the team believing you’ll beat everybody until you turn up and don’t? If Evatt picks a similar side with the same system I see no reason to be confident that we’ll win other than by the law of averages we should click at some point. Unless Evatt changes himself or Sharon changes Evatt I’m afraid I really don’t see enough improvement even if we do win on Saturday. It’s not only the players lacking in confidence now. ☹️

Today yeah. I know there's a quota of articles to fill for a week, but there's something a bit underhand for me about continually putting out bits of the same interview when they know exactly what sort of response it will get in the current circumstances.

Whatever it is, it's poor form.

The statements attributed to George are hardly news though are they? You just have watch what they try to do on the pitch to see that they are attempting to play in an intricate and risky style with L1 standard players and the problems arise when passes go astray or they are swamped by an aggressive press that they don't have the skill to play through or round.

I'd back the likes of Grealish or Foden to get out of a tight corner with the ball or De Bruyne to slide an inch perfect pass through a crowd, but our lads just can't do that consistently enough unfortunately.

Nor is it an "either/or" situation. All the top teams know how to win back possession, defend properly, get their shots off and do all the basics correctly - the intricate stuff is the icing on that particular cake not the whole cake.

Whatever changes Evatt makes on Saturday I suspect he won't throw the baby out with the bathwater and try to retain a lot of what he's been trying to do because we simply don't have the personnel to change style overnight. Might change the system/starting positions though.

Don't pass the ball for the sake of it?

Hmm, seems that that's what we do at times, particularly around the defenders.

Moreover, if the passing is meant to bemore purposeful, then they aren't good enough to implement it.

Doesn't help with 2 (2½) midfielders neither.

Not saying its impossible, but having watched our games this season where just having a half chance feels over optimistic, I genuinely don't know what that's based on.  That's not being pessimistic, I'm just talking as someone comparing our form with Reading's.  They aren't Port Vale or Cheltenham, they've drawn at Brum, beat Wigan and Charlton, they will be stronger and faster than us like everyone else we've played.  Where do we see the next goal coming from?

Without a certain degree of pragmatism, no one tactic, no matter how good the players, will always be successful.  I remember the 2nd Wigan game as us trying to conduct some bold experiment while they were just here to win a football match.

Several Oxford fans after their 5-0 defeat at ours were calling for Buckingham's head. Look how he's turned that around by setting up his teams and tactics when they're facing superior opposition.
