Garrp
http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2014/03/04/jl-ex-bolton-boss-chelsea-got-an-absolute-bargain-for-17-million/ On Cahill “From day one when I walked into Bolton, he just oozed class,” Coyle said. “He is so talented and yet still relatively young at 28. Chelsea was always the right move for him because I knew he would learn and improve so much playing alongside John Terry.” “The summer before he moved to Chelsea, Manchester City came in and offered £17 million and a player,” he explained. “Come the following January in 2012, when it was Chelsea who came in, it was the right thing for him, no doubt. They got absolutely got a bargain at £7million.” so why didn't you take the 17 million and a player you fucking moon man? honest to god not that it matters as he'd have spunked the money on shite anyway
Garrp
so we basically paid 10 million for Cahill to play an extra 4 months for us great work

Whites man
I remember us & Arsenal having protracted discussions about Cahill via the press at that time not City.
Kill Cricket
Not wanting to be a killjoy or whatever, but this sounds to me like Coyle's version of Allardyce's "I could have bought that world-class player for 75p and a pack of fags" stories. I remain sceptical...
Moderators Zico Posted March 4, 2014 Moderators Share Posted March 4, 2014 I remember us & Arsenal having protracted discussions about Cahill via the press at that time not City. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2023513/Arsenal-interested-signing-Gary-Cahill-Bolton.html "Cahill has a £17m release clause in his Bolton contract, though the Gunners are reluctant to go that high given he has under 12 months to run on his existing deal." so £17M release clause, but he never spoke to City? CIty were linked in the Jan http://www.mcfc.co.uk/news/team-news/2012/january/manchester-city-transfer-speculation-window-shopping-day-ten and they'd give us Boyata on loan the previous summer I THink Coyle is getting confused

exiledwhite2
Coyle wouldn't have made that call on his own, if at all
MalcolmW
£17m plus Sturridge.... FACT I don't for one moment believe that City could have given us £17M + Sturridge. After all, he'd been a Chelsea player since 2009.
BOWTUN BAKED
I don't for one moment believe that City could have given us £17M + Sturridge. After all, he'd been a Chelsea player since 2009. Surely that would've been great business for City then?
Sweep
If City had offered £17M I'm surprised Cahills agent wasn't making a lot of noise in the press. It's amazing this was all kept so secret at the time
Guest Blixa
The City story was ongoing for a while - seem to recall it was players that made up much of the fee, players we probably didn't want, didn't want to come to us or wanted too much money. Either way, if if was £17m cash, he would have gone. Sounds like the story has got lost in translation. Or Owen has belateldy hit the bottle. Big E
What if city backed out of deal? Would that be believable. If for instance they didn't need him as their situation changed regarding players available within their squad
