Smiffs Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 An ambitious council drives an ambitious planning policy which should then naturally invite external investment. Bolton drive it to becoming a commuter town attractive to fuck all but the the student pound and anyone wanting to get out of the place quickly. When they make it next to impossible to build a town centre hotel but allow a super mosque to be built with fuck all consideration to the infrastructure you know they're cuckoo. They harp on about junction 4...a zillion square foot of distribution space 5 miles from the town centre. Great if you're a prostitute murdering wagon driver but fit for fuck all else. Quote
frank_spencer Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 Big decisions should have been made 10-15 years ago. It's clear the town centre is too big but the council seemingly have no strategy and are not up to managing the evolution. They had massive and impressive plans for the town centre.A minor blip in the world's finances kinda put a dent in that. Their apparent lack of plan since then is where the problems have really come from. Quote

There was supposed to be at least 4 new hotels before the recession. As above the fucking about since then is what's costing the town Quote
Smiffs Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 That global blip must have missed Bury Wigan and Warrington. Quote

frank_spencer Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 That global blip must have missed Bury Wigan and Warrington. No idea of Warrington but the ball was rolling on Bury and Wiggin just before and as the recession hit. Quote
Alf Hartigan Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 Bury is compact and thriving, Warrington is thriving in general not just town centre. (prospering from location) Wigan has got more empty shops than Bolton, last time I went half of the Galleries shopping centre was empty. Quote
DirtySanchez Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 Wigan?? It can be done, Rotherham is decent around the centre now despite being in the shadow of Sheffield Quote
Smiffs Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 That makes it appear like fuck all was built for 5 years which is far from the truth. Those plans bolton council came up with, half a billion of other folks money building two big sites at Cutacre and Horwich, a bus station to get everyone out of town as quick as possible an office block next door to it, and a student village. A private developer builds in the arches the market place. Nothing of that merchants quarter. The council have done fuck all but getting their crayons out and draw all over some plans hoping someone will build it for them. That's not ambitious it's playschool. And to top it all off we've got that bent cunt Morris stating commercial landlords wanting a return on their property as being unrealistic. Fucking hell, they'll be beating down his door to redevelop Bolton coming out with shit like that. Quote

bolty58 Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 Smiffers is correct but no one really wants to say what the problem truly is. Who owns/runs all the pound shops? Who can rally its voters for council elections to be certain in whose hands control of development (and other things) will remain? Not in their interest to let big developers modernise the town - they look after their voters. No megastores or brand name shops - just small traders flogging shite from third world countries suits them just fine and maintains the status quo. Await all of the usual bollocks from apologists who do all of their shopping in Bury, The Trafford Centre or Manc and wouldn't even venture into the eyesore the town centre has become. Quote

If your looking for a conspiracy then I think your barking up the wrong tree with this one. Most pound shops are huge organisations and not owned by Abdul from the local mosque.... Poundland (also 99p stores) was listed on the stock market but is now owned by Steinhoff who also own Bensons for Beds and Harvey's - I believe they are one of the biggest companies in the world globally (revenue) I'd guess many of us could own a piece of it via our pensions Home Bargains is owned by TJ Morris (Tom Morris I believe), he's worth about £2b and sits 46th in the times rich list Similar stories with all the other pound shops / discounters Nothing to see here Quote

bolty58 Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 If your looking for a conspiracy Nope, not at all. Just a logical conclusion from results of council decisions. Needs flattening and redeveloping and the redevelopers are out there. Just no welcome mat being laid out for them. Quote
waffer cup 07 Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 The town centre's better than it was 2 or 3 years ago but still not great Anyone been to the Rock when its pouring down, nice shops poor design. Quote
tomski Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 The rock is overrated. I gladly now prefer shopping in Bolton over Bury again. Quote
bolty58 Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 The town centre's better than it was 2 or 3 years ago but still not great I was there last June and it seemed to have deteriorated further to me in the 24 months since my previous visit. Quote

no balls Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 (edited) In Morris' back garden? I sniggered at that comment too If he'd thought about housing folk from Bolton instead of chasing the gateway town cash local folk might not be struggling for housing Edited December 22, 2016 by no balls Quote
Youri McAnespie Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 (edited) Who'd have thought the dossers would have an unlikely champion in Nb? Most of the tramps knocking about are from elsewhere, I've said it before and I'll say it again, give them all a good dousing with a water cannon, the ones with abodes will piss off home, the ones without will get exposure...Add some cheap Lynx showergel to the cannon's tanks and they'll all receive a much needed freshening up.
