A look around Europe very quickly indicates the direction of travel. Not across the Channel for a start. All politics now, righty of wrongly, is about immigration - so they need to be seen to be doing something The difficult thing is, that we do need immigration, and whilst we all acknowledge this, and are happy if it's "skilled" we have the issue of needing loads of unskilled as well, because "our own" won't do the jobs, and even if they would, there aren't enough of them Quote
Not in Crawley Posted May 12, 2025 Posted May 12, 2025 I've not yet read the white paper, so will wait until then but I'd say it was a very sensible speech this morning from the Prime Minister regarding this touchpaper issue. Quote

Totally agree. And there is no doubt the surge to Reform has pushed this higher up the agenda. Hopefully, the migration issue can be solved by the grown ups, but Reform deserve acknowledgement for getting it sped up. I still wouldn't want them running the country, but as a single issue party, they've certainly achieved what they wanted to. Quote

I don't think even Reform members actually want to run the country. If them banging the drum about stuff and the odd knee jerk/protest by-election win gets things moving or spoken about then it all good for me. Basically an opposition worth its salt doing its job. I tend to agree....but in the same way as some of those pushing for Brexit (such as Boris Johnson) didn't really want to win, it can happen. Quote

They seem pretty well mobilised. Just have a look how many Reform UK profile pictures you see on Facebook. I still think they will struggle come a GE - but who knows in this day and age? Quote

Whether that is true or not doesn't really matter. A start has been made-even if it is only a white paper- and they have to be given some credit for that. Will take time to become law, and of course its the nitty gritty that counts. Quote

This issue will have mixed views amongst the unions, but more importantly, the prime minister has witnessed the political upheaval caused by Reform. He and his government have absolutely no option to finally listen and respond. Quote
Spider Posted May 12, 2025 Posted May 12, 2025 Reports of "thousands" of immigrants massed on the french coast may well have given him a nudge as well. What probably boils everyone's piss, mine included, is that they know these people are primed and ready, yet fail to stop them. I assume they do stop SOME, but if they know they're all there ready to set sail, surely it isn't that hard to sort? Could they not get one of them big wave machines like they had at the Water Place to just lift the dinghies up and plop them back on french soil? Quote

Imagine 1000s being lined up at Blackpool ready to fuck off to Ireland then the coastguard / Navy / Border force stopped them. The locals would be fuming. Quote

No hiding place, and held in contempt by voters. Government heavily defeated on the back of it. Exactly as it should be. Brexit made it far easier for the public to see the issues and directly hold elected members responsible. Now the democratic process is evolving, and the prime minister is having to rethink policy, in accordance with the wishes of the people. Succeed and well done. Fail and lose. Quote

Lt. Aldo Raine Posted May 12, 2025 Posted May 12, 2025 One thing that's clear is the care worker visa system was financially unsustainable (last year, the average worker on a Health and Care worker visa brought three dependents) We also need to wean ourselves of a reliance on cheap imported labour And this will have played a large part in their decision making: "Officials believe that as well as underestimating the levels of long-term immigration, government forecasts are also overstating its economic benefits They fear from 2028 net migration will be closer to 525,000 - currently the high-end of the ONS projections - because migrants are staying for longer than previously thought" Quote
