Spider Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 Report on the news - a lot of carehome staff have moved in full time to protect and care for the residents. That, to me, is on a par with marching off to war. Those places are not great. I really must stop moaning about being stuck in. Quote

Becky @beckyyy_4 · 10h I work in an ICU in the UK. I KNOW the seriousness of the situation however the media’s negativity and focus just on the UK is exhausting! I love my job but at the moment it is very mentally draining. The media are worsening this! Quote

I think by far the best thing to do is to find one or two opinions which match your own, and use that to dismiss the dozens of others saying anything different. Quote

Either way, I'm thinking my holiday to Mexico on May 28th definitely isn't happening now Edited April 11, 2020 by Sweep Quote

Anecdotes don't provide reliable evidence unless measured empirically. Becky's testimony means nothing unless you measure it against the testimony of others in her department, and then similar departments in other NHS trusts, so unless you have better analysis - it needs to be taken as what it is, someone's point of view, it's not proof of anything. The data we have at the moment shows that we are going to be one of, if not the worst, Western country, in terms of death rate. There are reasons for that, it's not happened by chance. That's not to say things won't change in the short and long term, and again it's not likely to be down to chance, it will be based on the decisions the government makes, and how the UK population react to it. I've spent too much time trying to analyse how it''s is going to pan out, the only conclusion I've come to is, we didnt take it seriously enough early on, we've been too slow and not stringent enough with this mini peak, and we are going to pay in deaths for several weeks to come. I'm now going to concentrate on losing some weight, keeping my business alive, my family safe and keeping my lad fit enough to return to playing for BWFC academy as soon as possible. If anyone want to see how different countries are managing the outbreak, have a look at this - and watch Sweden, Greece, USA, Germany, new Zealand, Italy, UK for comparisons of how different methods produce different results. https://www.bsg.ox.ac.uk/research/research-projects/oxford-covid-19-government-response-tracker My prediction for lock down being lifted - its not going to happen fully until we're sure that we are close to herd immunity (either by vaccine or natural progression of the spread) or a vastly more successful form of treatment is devised. Nothing is going to happen in the UK until we can see infection rates are very low, and we are at lest 6 weeks away from that. Good luck to everyone - see you in a few weeks Quote
only1swanny Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 Its pointless comparing with other countries, they are different and the differences are not measurable. Seem loads comparing us to New Zealand, world of difference between the two. Quote
MalcolmW Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 My god-daughter is a GP in the Midlands. A nearby dental practice gave its spare supply of facemasks to the GP surgery, from which they appear to have been stolen. Quote
Mounts Kipper Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 (edited) It’s little surprise that both South Korea and Germany have a national healthcare system which is also topped up by employees who are also enrolled in a private healthcare system, perhaps this system is better placed to deal with something on this scale and a better way of funding healthcare, we need to look at the German model and see if this is something we should also be doing. The NHS is sacrosanct, and will probably become even more revered. I doubt anyone will want to organise a root and branch review; it will be too difficult. What has happened in recent weeks is that the Government have taken over, as they are ones seem as accountable by the public. I expect that will continue. Quote

If another system works better then it shouldn’t be sacrosanct. This is about delivering the best service and giving our healthcare workers the best tools and facilities that we can.
