Sad day. I knew him as a 4️⃣

Used to watch from the Lever End first off but I know him from Monteraze and went on a few trips when he did away coaches.

Roys family used to have the Rose and Crown in Farnworth as I recall.

Monteraze! Yes not Montezumas. 👍

Fell very sad about this. He very rarely lost the ball, worked hard and was extremely fit. Would have fitted in well with the modern game. We spent  money on Cantello and Mcnab to replace him, but they couldn't shift him. Was player /manager at St Thomas at Halliwell for a while, made everyone feel welcome. A credit to the club.

RIP Roy , fantastic servant of the club (575 apps) only Hoppy with three more appearances betters Roy.

Always first name on the teamsheet , absolute 100% player.
Scored an early career hatrick playing as a makeshift CF , seems like only yesterday , think I’ve got something in my eye.

Sad day for us all.

Sad news indeed, very underrated player and the heart beat of the team, was a real grafter in the midfield and part of my early happy memories of watching the whites. Have an image in my mind of him wearing a bandage on his head, could be wrong. RIP Roy of the wanderers.

I think that image is from Burnley away on the opening day of 77/78 when he scored the winner.RIP

I've known Roy personally for well over 30 yrs and this news is just terrible.

A true Bolton legend who will be missed.

Sleep well, Greavo.

Rip Roy

Got to know him when he owned Northfield snooker club.My 1st memory of him playing was when he scored direct from a corner, think it was 76/77 season

Too young to remember him as a player, but did a few trips from Monteraze, and he even coached at Leigh RMI when I was 18ish. Sad day, hope the club celebrate his life and achievements accordingly

This is very sad news. Obviously younger fans wouldn't have known him but for those of a certain age he defined Bolton Wanderers for a decade.

Roy was an absolute hero to me. 🥲

I recall rocking up at the Baseball Ground for our famous victory in the League Cup ¼ Final to hear he wasn't available. He'd not missed a match in something like 200 & I was fearful that we could perform without him.

A bloody good squash player too. He beat me several times. I, in turn, beat him ... never.

This is the man who, on his profile, in 'Shoot' magazine said the person he would most like to meet was Joyce McKinney. For those who don't recall her Google will fill in the gaps.

Roy, you were ... ARE ... a legend. RIP.

He also said in the same interview, that his favourite pre-match meal was rice pudding.

He was a mainstay of the 1st Wanderers side I went to watch, around the time he moved from no9 to no4 I think. He chipped in with loads of important goals but it's the Spurs one I remember best.

RIP

Echo that as I started in '77.

RIP cockers

I’m about 20 years too late for watching Roy but always knew about him and how much of a Wanderers legend he was (mainly due to this place). I was then lucky enough to meet him quite a few times and spend time listening to his stories at parties - great entertainment and as others have said, a true gent. RIP to a great man and a true wanderers legend

Without wanting to sound Scouse, this needs to be on the big screen Sunday, in front of 20k+ and millions across the globe; not to 900 tomorrow night
