Maybe they think that with some money, he can replicate how well he did years ago at Colchester / Norwich........

Yeah but in which league

I didnt realise till yesterday that crouch and Stephen Ireland still played

Well he has done well in prem, championship and league 1. So you could argue they have covered all bases.

I think he will keep them up. Could be a good move if uninspiring.

The guy has a chequered record but us that any different to pulis, pardew and Hughes etc. British managers are really not very good

I see VAR was used to award a goal last night in the Leicester Fleetwood game. 1 min 7 seconds or summat daft. Overturning a linesmans offside call.

This will be shit.

People wanking all over it on social media.

The whole point and thrill of watching football is watching that ball hit the back of the net or creep over the line.

Seriously is the death of football.

Aye, but they were griping on BT Sport that Iheanacho had been deprived that thrill by the process. They didn’t seem to realise that there’d have been no goal at all without VAR.

I’m with you, by the way. I can’t stand it.

And I don’t think it’s beyond the realms of possibility that the liner took one for the team and put his flag up when he knew full well it was inside, just to make a point.

my one reason for favouring it is that it should be better for lower teams

anything that takes out the influencing of referees has to be considered

They've said its going to be maximum benefit minimum interruption.

Makes sense, but they gave an example earlier, of the move last night, had the striker been played through just after the half way line, and the linesman given offside, the ref won't review it, even though he may well have gone on and scored.

Some ref influence could still occur.

I see where you're coming from, but all in all don't like it. 67 seconds!- put the kettle on....

67 seconds!- put the kettle on....

And that was for an easy one - just one element to consider, with no question about the outcome.

Penalties and red cards will take an eternity and they’ll still be getting them wrong.

No one on here would be grumbling about VAR if it was in use the night Taggart's header crossed the line and that goal had been given after 67 seconds hence keeping us in the Prem

It's the future

What happens if a keeper or defender stops because they’ve seen the flag, only for it to be overruled and the goal stand? They will argue they would have stopped it if it wasn’t for the flag going up.

Seems to me that people not at the game, either just looking at the result or watching in their armchair will love it because the delay doesn’t really affect them - for the fans at the game that have to wait around until they can celebrate, therefore losing that initial buzz of a goal, it will be wank

i disliked its introduction in cricket for similar reasons

got used to it now, but theres still that 'yeah, fantastic....wonder if there's a review coming'

fcuk knows on your first point

i guess the answer is, what would united want

The whistle stops the game, not the flag.

OK, but his point remains, i think

ball could be in the net before the whistle has finished blowing, then its proved to be onside

what then?

It’s tough shit. You play to the whistle.

Refs were ignoring linesmen long before VAR was conceived.

Refs were ignoring linesmen long before VAR was conceived.

So a player gets put through on goal but is 30 yards out, flag goes up, ref blows his whistle. At this point the striker is one on one with the keeper and slots the ball into the goal but the keeper has made a half arsed attempt at saving it because he’s seen the flag and the ref has 1 second earlier blown for offside.

What happens? Are refs now just going to ignore the flag and let play carry on and then review to see if it was offside, because if they make the call that it was offside and stop the play then how will VAR benefit the attacking team? No goal was scored and so can’t be awarded to them?

I’m sure all these scenarios and more have been thought of but I can’t see how there are easily distinguishable boundaries

If the referee has blown the whistle to stop the game then there’s nothing to review because, to all intents and purposes, nothing that happens afterwards matters.

I don’t know the answer to Eddie’s question about VAR changing the way referees do their job, but if they start letting play continue just to see if someone scores a goal that can then be ruled out on review then we might as well give it up as a bad job.

Like I’ve said before, it’s a shit idea.
