Opened this thread expecting the worst. I'm a 25 year old man; what the fuck do I know?! I tell you what I know, Roy was a fucking hard bastard that played hundreds of games for the club I love. RIP doesn't even cut it. I particularly like the comment about going for a beer with Nat.

What sad news. Glad I bought the book now.

A true BWFC great. They just don't make them like him any more. One of my earliest and fondest BWFC memories is Roy clattering wingers into the ditch.

Just thought the same myself 58 minutes, lets get it done it's the least we can do for our legends, prefer to sing myself but happy to just clap.

No reason why both can't be done.

I'm another one too young to have seen him play, but he's one of those names that everyone knows, regardless of their age. RIP.

From 'The Heart of the Game' by Jimmy Greaves.

"... the hardest team I ever came across in the fifties: Bolton Wanderers. In an era when managers chose what they believed was their best eleven, and teams only changed due to injuries or lack of form, the Bolton defence ran off the tongue like a litany: Hopkinson, Hartle, Banks, Henin, Higgins, Edwards..."

"I remember one blockbuster of a tackle Tommy Banks made on my Chelsea team-mate, Micky Block. As Micky lay there writhing on the ground, Bolton's right back, Roy Hartle, came up to Banks.

'You're losing your touch, Tommy,' Hartle told him, pointing to Micky. 'He's still wriggling.'"

Just spoke with my dad about Hartle's passing.

He rattled off the '58 team without taking breathe, then proceeded to recant some Hartle stories.

My favourite was the time at the Theatre of Shite.

Hartle was coming towards the end of his playing career & came up against a 17 year old George Best. He was having a torrid time of it & clearly getting frustrated, Hartle obviously had decided enough was enough & at the next opportunity took a swing at Best, booting him clearly & cleanly straight in the nuts. A young Best was lifted in the air, spread eagled, went limp & collapsed. Dennis Law scored the resulting penalty.

I don't know how accurate this or other tales were but it had me in stitches for a good while.

Has died. RIP.

He told some great talesin Bradshaw Conny Club over the years

Watched him hundreds of times at Burnden. Not only a fierce tackler but he had a thunderous shot to. The only time he ventured over the half way line was to take our free kicks just outside the penalty area. He played in an era when men were men and you could go in hard and show your studs! Rest in peace Roy and thanks for the great memories.  Grandad. (Rochdale Whites)
