I was really off football until World Cup 2018. Then I was getting into watching random games again. This past season with all the Var shite though is making me rapidly go off it again

Bang on

Don’t get me wrong I love spending time with the family but it’s not the same

Since turn of the year work has been challenging so the trips to Mk, Wimbledon etc kept me going, even when booking them months in advance it’s still something

When we went 1-0 the crowd singing "let's all have a disco".......

Surprised how many Union flags are still on show. When did they stop being taken to England game? You never see them now.

Euro 96 I reckon, if nothing else because of playing against Scotland at a major tournament.

Extra time now. To be fair Cameroon have been better than England.

Hope we can win, and then beat the Krauts on Wednesday neet in Turin......

Barry Davies must have spunked his Farah's silly during this game over the Cameroons. He fucking loved them and i reckon he wanted to give Roger old man Milla a good bumming.

England Swings like a pendullum do.

Agreed.  Union Jacks aplenty in 1990, and 1992 (Sweden, Euros), we didnt qualify for USA 94 then playing at home in 96 meant flags werent really necessary.  Still some Union Jacks to be seen at France 98 but they'd gone by 2000 in Holland & Belgium.

In all ways the game has changed .The pals I went with either dont go any more or worse are no longer with us .Buried my best mate last week he stopped going a while ago due to a combination of poor health & financial problems. He was a Wanderer through & through though at one time he went to every single game Partick Thistle away in the Anglo Scottish cup springs to mind.He once got off the train at Derby ( London bound) to get twenty embassy for Terry Wharton the silly sod almost missed getting back on.

The craic we used to have dissolved over a period of time .The seventies were mad  & exciting .Loads of bevying trouble around every corner it was chaos.Of course we were younger then.

I stopped going to most aways in the eighties due to marriage & kids plus finances .My mate who was single carried on .He chalked up twice the aways compared to me.Although the eighties were pretty grim we still preserved the comeraderi & could still muster a good following on the day.

The Rioch era topped the lot football & atmosphere wise for me even though I was now in my forties the buzz was electric .The move to the Reebock sort of signaled the end of all the  mayhem of the past although we were more successful there was definately something missing

The European tours were fantastic & obviously had novelty value & will live in the memory but not in the same way as the promotion winning team that chalked up one hundred goals under Colin Todd.

Sometimes I ask myself why do I still go?Few mates still attend .Is it pure loyalty ?being a lapsed Catholic might be relevant a substitute for going to church every week ? Thing is I cannot imagine not going & the rougher times get the more unlikely it is that I will quit .Enjoyment from the game is minimal at the moment but there's always the hope.

Hope is was keeps us going .This time next year Rodders we'll be promoted .Once in never out.

Top post, I know where you’re coming from, sad to hear your mate passed away. RIP to what sounded a top Wanderer.

The last 5 years in particular have been enough to test anyone’s loyalty, they have been a shambles apart from 1 season. The good times will return at some point though and they will be sweet

Oh no people are going to find out it wasnt the best tournament in the world played ever.

Some of those games I wouldn't fancy watching 90 seconds of let alone the full game!

I've been watching the 79 cup final, Arsenal v Man U (ITV).  A surprisingly good game, its half time 2-0 to the Arsenal.  Their fans were singing You'll Never Walk Alone very clearly, and they finished it with that annoying clapping version.  Liam Brady, class player.  Great innocent days when the FA Cup Final was pure magic, the pre-match on-pitch interviews are priceless.

Not sure how old you are mate, but in them days, I'd start watching the FA cup build up from around 10 in the morning.

These days, I can't remember the last final that I watched live.

We're probably a similar vintage, my first clear memory of a Cup Final is 1975, West Ham v Fulham.  It was in black & white for me but still amazing.  The year after, Utd v Southampton, was the first one I was obsessed enough to be glued to the whole thing from mid morning.  The 5 finals 76 to 80 always contained Utd or Arsenal and they were the magic years for me, gradually getting less special throughout the 80s and gradually eroding to the relative non event it is now.

Observations from opening minutes of ITV's Euro 96 coverage...

John Barnes mad suit

Wembley's new nets

Decent opening ceremony in that it was over in seconds

Southgate saying he'll look back on all this in July at how far he's come.
