You may recall Allardyce finding that Michael Ricketts was a slow recoverer, even in a game. He changed his training regime to allow for this.

I doubt Ian Greaves got over excited at Worthington's more relaxed approach to things.

Could you imagine the "They have to show it in training" brigade if they had le Tissier on their books ?

A counter argument may, of course, be laid at Rashford's door I suppose.

Seem to recall stories of Ian Greaves tearing his hair out at Frankies lack of "enthusiasm" on the training pitch and his "laziness" on the pitch .

But when you have total mavericks like Worthy and Le Tissier you just have to hold your hands up and say do what you like . Getting either of them to become dynamic workhorses would have been like trying to plait custard.

Thought BSA made a large mistake trying to get Jay-Jay to do more defensive work and track back etc . Just stand back and let them do what they do  cos its 'kin glorious.

Seem to recall a Greaves story where he said he was giving Frank a bollocking for just that - while Frank just looked him in the eye for the whole time while keeping a perfect "keepy-uppy" going for the duration. I suspect he got the message.

Remember going to a Sportsmans dinner , one of the speakers (cant remember his name ) was involved in the English National team set up said the England Team went on a tour of South America , He said along the lines of ...

"I saw Frank getting off the plane in Rio . The next time I saw him was getting back on the plane 2 weeks later. Nobody knew where he went and couldnt contact him for the entire time .  On the plane home he was just sat there looking like he'd been drained off all his blood  , a big smile on his face and a mysterious itch he couldnt get rid of that we were sure wasnt down to the mosquitoes"

That story is bollocks....

He played 8 games in 1974, never selected again....

Next England tour of South America was in 1977......

Very much so. Made a stunningly great player into a team player & captain. He did those things but lost some of what made him great.

Vast majority of "Sportsmans Dinner" speakers talk absolute bollocks. They're just there to entertain. Basically being stand up comedians for an hour or so. Same goes for ex-footballers on podcasts. Fair play to them though, it's a good grift. Brian Clough would be spinning in his grave if he knew how much nonsense was being talked about him in exchange for a few quid.

Used to be a petrol station in Edgworth and when me and the girlfriend got back to her house next door at 2 am on Saturday morning Frank was having a slash on one of the pumps. Scored that afternoon.

The ones people tell about him on tiktok are really funny.

Getting Mark crossley ? To play for his lads Sunday league team as a ringer, and getting Stuart Pearce to fix his wife's iron..

I’m surprised that our own should get caught up in this as a legacy.

I watched it. I saw him slot into a structured role. We all witnessed one of the clubs greatest ever talents contain himself for the greater good. I loved him for it. But he certainly constrained his flair.

See I don't think it was "constraining" his flair after the first season. More a case of using it effectively so the flair moments led to goals and good chances

I disagree.

His BWFC years were some of his greatest and happiest of his career.

His latest SSN documentary piece highlighted this, as does countless footage of his wonder, his PFA nominations, opponents appraisals and his world wide appeal when with us.

This long throw, stifled talent was something pedalled by the West Ham fuelled southern media bias, who couldn’t quite get their head round the fact that the premierships greatest talent was plying his trade with little old Bolton Wanderers.

I’m surprised that our own should get caught up in this as a legacy.

Thats not what Ive said . didnt question JayJays happiness at the Club or his love for Bolton. Nor his long throws just that BSA asked Okocha to do more defensively and help out more with tracking back and taking the ball from the defence towards the end of his stint with us .

He did it and did it very well but his goals dropped off and his greativity fell away as a result. He was being asked to do everything. He took throw ins and corners on both sides and nearly all the free kicks as well as being captain and asked to do more defensively .

IMO he should have just been left to do what he did naturally and organise the team round him .

In a similar way with Ricky G , we got a great left back but I thought we lost more than we gained as he was a better left winger . But Im not a manager so just going off what I remember and thought at the time.

Was Ricky G not the prototype left wing back? While he certainly had clear defensive responsibilities, he also continued to get forward.

One of his key attributes was his engine and speed that allowed him to quickly join an attack and/or get back to deliver the defensive role.

He certainly was when he played with Mendy on the opposite side and a defensive 3 in the middle but not really when part of a flat back 4 . The fact that he did get forward as much as he did as a left back was tribute to his speed and stamina as you say.

I'm sure his lad was in the Academy at Blackburn Rovers and Ricardo moved back to Manchester.

Now questioning myself - going to fact check it!

EDIT: He was at Blackburn and now at Stockport County - https://www.stockportcounty.com/che-signs-his-first-pro-contract/

There are some clips of keeper Mark Crossley's Clough stories during his time at Forest. Obvious bollocks, but Crossleys impersonation of Clough is worth a listen.

Agree with much of that.

In the end though, I think Ricky became a pretty decent left back in his own right.

I remember his headed clearance (from Henry iirc) against Arsenal, and Alan Hansen raving about him afterwards.

Toal and Jones injured?  Or just not in the squad?

They were both struggling and not training after last week. But didn’t sound serious

Schumachers interview yesterday talks about Vic’s injury, scans shown up some ligament damage, that could keep him out for a bit.

First thoughts were that was going to leave us with no back-up with forwards, but he mentioned Lolos and CMG who played in the B team again this week. I liked the look of him up front in his very brief spell there last season with JDB.

Dempsey trained with some non-contact stuff.

Forino coming on nicely.

No Gethin this week, looks like he had rib damage at Shrewsbury.

But Toal is back available.
