Aye let's not rewrite history.

Santos was an absolute beast for a couple of seasons. Team of the year, the papa John's season in particular he was our whole heartbeat.

Other teams hated him. Every time he was out of the team we turned to rat shit.

He just ran out steam like the rest of them. He took the brunt for Toal and Jones too.

That Red card at Blackpool was the beginning of the end.

Not sure that’s true but if you seriously want promotion you don’t sell your best players and promotion was our stated aim.

if the right offer comes in for any of ours, they're off

His loss of peak fitness slowed him down & lost him one of his strengths.

He hid this beneath Evatt tippy-tap. Which he swallowed hook, line & sinker. When he started getting stick for that the dummy got spat out.

For a guy who's career amounted to nothing until he came here &, yes, he excelled, he quickly reverted to feeling picked on.

Anyway, he's gone now. I personally doubt he'll ever recapture those days but if he does fair play to him. He certainly wasn't going to here.

All true. But he was still superb for us for a good couple of seasons-ish.

MMW - Santos will end up at Wigan 😁

Last minute winner to stop us going up at their place. Fact.

Was an absolute beast. People can look at the mistakes (part of the way we played) but I always feared the worst when he didn’t play. He’s left with plenty of credit from me

Same here. Evatt ruined him in my opinion. Aside from his imperious defending, he was fucking brilliant at pinging diagonal balls for our wing backs to run on to, then he just suddenly stopped doing it and started the 'slow it down and stand on the ball' shite. I'm probably talking bollocks, but in hindsight it feels like Evatt purposefully sucked every ounce of creativity out of the team in order to play 'his way'.

I think you’re right and sadly it wasn’t just Santos he did that with which is why he couldn’t cope with anyone who disagreed with him, Dapo, Sarce, Doyle and Declan for example and never signed experience or players with a strong character who wouldn’t have towed the line.

Are you just making stuff up here?

You are right Evatt was a poor man manager. The type that doesn't let anyone shine.

A bully who wanted it all his own way and with a bag to put it in.

If it went well it was his doing .If it didn't it was the players fault. He should have gone before the season began.

He’d also go on runs carrying the ball into the midfield putting pressure on other teams. Can’t remember him hardly doing this in the last two seasons, instead we just allowed teams to press and force mistakes which made him and the rest of the defence look shocking.

Have to disagree about the “sucking creativity” thing. Santos - and the others - were given more opportunity to be creative under Evatt, not less, and that was the problem. He was expected to be the last defender in a team that piled forward whilst spraying passes around and was often left isolated on the break. Thankfully he had the pace and strength to deal with a lone striker most of the time but he got no help to deal with numbers breaking. The rest spent most of the time encamped in the opposition half and were expected to find creative ways to break down packed defences. Too often they weren’t good enough.

If Evatt had sacrificed a bit of possession and field position and have defenders to actually defend instead of goalie + Santos + 7 or 9 attackers the games would have been more open - but as we lacked pace and power up top to exploit it we were forced to play the way he’d recruited for. The only flaw in Evatt’s plan was that to successfully execute his “creative” playing style you’d need better quality players that were out of our price range.

Counterattacking football seems to be creating more chances and winning more games than possession based football currently so despite his stated preference, I’d be surprised if Schuey goes down that road again.

he was. he can be both great for two and shit for the rest at the same time.

Pace was his biggest strength and sadly the injury hampered him. IE has a lot to answer for making players play when injured.

Living up to your user name again? 🙂

Perhaps 😉

I knew about his fall out with Sarc. The fall out with Doyle, Dapo and Declan John because of them speaking out was news to me.

Exactly and that is why we should have got rid of Evatt last Summer. A totally wasted season.
