Yes  its worth a Watch

Its ok, its not history though, and not that good as even light entertainment. Its the portrayal of Edward the Confessor that had me nashing my teeth, and Hadrada as a bullish oik rather than a respected and intelligent ruler he was? The costumes are crap as well.

Its one of the most interesting episodes in medieval history featuring Anglo Saxons, Normans, Scandinavians, Bretons - there's no need to create a new fiction with a script that seems to be aimed at 12 year olds.

Anyway, still watched it mind as James Norton is very good, but such a let down as I was really looking forward to it.

Just watched the one of the guy who held on by his fingernails 15,000ft up on Everest

It was a real cliff hanger

I watched one about an 84 year old pop star and how he stores all his old outfits in a special wardrobe.

It was a real Cliff hanger.

I love medieval stuff, so was really looking forward to watching it. I watched them all in two sittings, I enjoyed it, but as you say, it is like it was written for 12 year olds. A bit disappointing all in all.

You're right about Edwards The Confessor, he was just ridiculous.

Ive just got my History Hit subscription- have sacked off others for it. I'll stick to that for the moment, got some amazing programmes on it. Future of TV is highly segmented interest channels.

I didnt as im not a massive Dan Snow fan as I think hes got where he has by a lot of inside help but this is a great service for 7.99 a month. Hundreds of documentaries and I have to say he saw a gap in the market and has done really well. Bought out by little dot studios now and sells the shows to mainstream channels. There's a good article about the development of it in Forbes.

Anyway, id say if you like this sort of stuff its a better way to spend a sub than a lot of streaming services.

Thing is

Medieval history is largely based on a few texts that have survived and they have to be taken with a pinch of salt a lot of the time.

Therefore, any drama about the anglo Saxons is wide open for interpretation. The venerable Bede wrote about events decades after they happened at a time when everything was word of mouth.

The Last Kingdom was great, despite the wooden Alexander Dreymon, but half of it was total bollocks in terms of what probably happened.

The reason the anglo Saxons are so intriguing is the fact we have only a few, tantalising clues about what really went on.

Marc Morris is my favourite writer on the subject, hard to see past him.

There's wide interpretation and then just bollocks - which it was. I dont mind that if it leans into it and makes it a decent yarn, but it didnt even do that.

Failed on both fronts.

And yes Bede was writing after events but as I say, there are actually facts about dates and the Norman Conquest and this just ignored them and didnt even create a nice to watch loads of guff.

Aye. We’ve had this debate about Dan Snow before and agreed to disagree. I take your point of view. I like the content. I hated history at school apart from the World Wars stuff because my dad and grandparents were involved and there were mementos in the house. I’m now really interested in history in general and listen to/watch loads. Agree that specific stuff like this is a better way to spend your money if you have an interest in a certain subject

He's certainly one of the best modern historians on the Norman Conquest - ive enjoyed both his books on the Anglo Saxons and the said Conquest - but really enjoyed other's such as David Howarth who for me is a slightly better writer.

Currently reading Anne Curry's (sorry Juliet barker not Anne Curry) book on Agincourt as a good overview of the start of Henry's part in the Hundred Years War and I find her writing really accessible. Interestingly she taught my mum when she was doing her dissertation on the Brontes.

I love Cat Jarman's books and her History Hit projects (only recently found out she's married to Charles Spencer!) And the Gone Medieval presenter Matt Lewis is a really good interviewer.

Just finished watching this.  Superb.  Another great dramatisation of a high-profile real-life crime incident. Sheridan Smith should get a gong for her acting 👏.

Yesterday I mentioned Stephen Marchant was Britains wealthiest comedian. I was told to watch The Outlaws as it’s hilarious

Fuck me it’s dark! I’m enjoying it, but feel slightly misled

Everything Sheridan Smith is in is usually very good, she is indeed a talented actress, However, i once saw her in a documentary about herself, think it was around theand time she was trying to become a singer.

She came across as qute annoying, childish and immature and not at all how you would expect.

Shame really.

If it's the same one I saw she was also feeding her dog chips, and letting it lick her fingers before she fed herself some more chips....

The filthy bitch, Sheridan, not the dog....

Inreally enjoy the chef's table series on Netflix - but the new one on noodles is amazing. Was in tears at the second episode with the Italian, and the Chinese women who now has five restaurants coming from a small village is a breathtaking story.

Well worth your time - fascinating stories where food is the thread that ties family, history etc

Lovely stuff.
