Equally, if it's good football you don't have to be trollied etc to have a good time.

We all have different reasons for 'enjoying' a game, but shite like that isn't going to appeal to next generation supporters.

I took lad and his mate and all three of us were totally bored, frustrated etc.

I can accept getting beaten, providing that the team has given what it can.

Didn't get that, and couple it with the same tedious approach to winning matches at home and it's like pulling teeth.

Ken's miles away from his 20000 crowds.

I very rarely drink at home games, but still manage to enjoy the craic with the people I go with, the same folk sat near us each week etc.

I see what you’re saying, but I just try to enjoy the time with my mates and family regardless of the result or style of play. Turning up is just what we do, isn’t it?

He's talking bollocks. If we were top of the table at Christmas playing "Parky" football, do you think folk would stay away?

Absolute fucking bollocks. They'd be queuing up to get in.

Absolute horse shit all this 'style of play' argument as are the plethora of statistics we are battered with these days.

One stat and one stat only matters. Which team put the ball in the net most over 90+ minutes.

Agreed. As long as it's not their own.

Aye. But it's bloody trying. How the hell am I going to convince the lad that it's a reasonable past time?

Your last paragraph is obviously correct. As is the comment about style. To a point.

I've said for ages, if we want to be direct, do so, properly and make it difficult for the opposition.

As it is, particularly at home, we certainly won't be top at Christmas.

I don't care if we play 5-5 formation and miss midfield out totally. Just make it effective.

Top teams are successful because they are effective.

Bottom ones because they aren't.

The walshaw wumwum can slag off folk in his usual patronising manner, but we're all entitled to call it as we see it.

The predicted scores earlier in this thread suggested very little confidence and it was borne out.

We can all accept ups and downs and I doubt anyone believed that it would be anything but a struggle.

I genuinely believe we have a better squad and slow progress is being made, but what I saw Saturday still left me wondering what they do on the training ground. I don't think that level is the best our squad is capable of producing.

Completely get all that. particularly the part about training during the week.

using Alnwick as an example, surely he doesnt do drill after drill of launching the ball as far as he possibly can.. Yet on a Saturday thats all he does

The argument from some last year was we didnt have the right players so we had to play a longer game. Fine, but as you say as long as it is effective and produces the goods. Regularly.

We (now) have some decent footballers in the squad yet persist with Plan A even when it is quite clearly not working. Our Plan A is normally other clubs Plan C (ie when they are desperate)

Since Parky walked through the door no one can debate the players fight for the cause however some must think from time to time during a game 'what the fuck are we playing at here' as the ball flies here there and everywhere

Yes winning games is the most important thing but as a supporter subjecting yourself to watching 90 minutes of that in order to get that win has become an obligation rather than looking forward to getting to the ground and watching the team perform well

True enough, I’m fighting a similar battle with my lad.

Keep going. Don't lose them chaps.

For me wins over performance every day.

At 13 he's only just trying ale and he doesn't like it. Yet.

Dave- I too started going around 1980 and loved it. As bad as we no doubt were at times there were also some good, memorable games, and (maybe it's age related) I don't remember it being as tedious.

I reckon players now are more capable, but it isn't reflected on the pitch.

Anyroad, we'll be back.

I came through the ranks in the early/mid 80’s. If I had to put up with it, they can too.

In fairness, I always loved it

Me too, and I relished going to 90% of the games home and away. You must admit there were no games then as bad as now. We were never outclassed so comprehensively at home, even if we lost 3-0 we would always get a foothold in the game for a period, and we would always have shots on goal.

So we're agreed we are happy to get wins in any way possible. The question for me is if we aren't winning (1 lucky win out of 3 at home), is this how you want us to play? If we'd seen 3 entertaining 2-2 draws this season i'd gladly take 1 less point knowing I wouldn't be embarrassed to invite someone to the next game.

Aye, okay.

I hardly missed a home game in the 80s and I assure you it was never so one sided as the sheff u game, or derby and Boro home or away last season. Granted everyone's style of football was different then with few teams passing the opposition to death, it tended to be more direct and end to end, nearly always 4-4-2. You certainly never saw more than 9 back at a corner so you always had chance to counter attack. We now see whole halves of games where we don't enter the penalty area, e.g. v Birmingham.

Remember those 1st 2 well, darlo on bonfire night in torrential rain with 3k on. A grim night losing 3-0 but but we weren't 'outclassed' just as when we won at their place 3-0 a few months later in the freight roverQ-F we didnt outclass them, they were both close games till the 2nd went in. I'm not sticking up for that Bristol game, terrible. I remember Warren Joyce getting cheered off with us singing "there's only 1 player trying". I stand by that the run of play was closer then, I wasn't bored unless we were 3 down.
