Generations of world leaders have had a go at resolving the multiple layers of issues and enmities in this part of the world. The word "intractable" was invented for the gordian knot that it is.

At the moment I don't think the world has the statesmen to skillfully de-escalate this. For instance I can think of many US President/Secretary of State combinations I'd rather have had to tackle it all.

When you look at Russia/Ukraine, the shrewd/subtle/incremental growing of China's threat to the west and this, I think we're living in a world that is less stable than for many years.

We can reflect on how the west has handled all of these issues since the end of the Cold War and pick fault - there'll have been undergraduate essays written about that by the bucket load. Whatever the problem, there ain't no obvious solution other than raising our awareness and preparedness.

I hate to say Donald Trump is right that the nations of NATO need to up their defence spending. I hate to say Keir Starmer is right that we need to spend 2.5% on defence. God alone knows where the money comes from given the levels of debt in the western world. But the only way ultimately that you can even big to put a lid on all these conflagrations and flashpoints is by making it known that you are prepared. It's a dreadful situation to be in.

That's probably the only thing I would agree with Trump on, all NATO countries should be meeting their obligations of membership.

I heard a German bloke on the radio this week, he said he wanted an EU Armed Forces with nuclear weapons. He said it was unfair that the US, France and GB had to pay for them for all their protection under NATO.

I would say that's the wrong way of going about it. We've had nations joining NATO recently and NATO is the way to go. But nations need to be paying their way more as part of that structure.

Israel vow to respond.

Brilliant times.

Some diplomat from Israel on TV last night 'explaining' that this was a historic moment. How they react has to right so they do not get badly judged by history.

All good so far.......She then went on to say that doing nothing was not an option as they need to strongly deter any future such action, so basically 'get into them, fuck them up'.

News reports are pretty fucked up, no one seems to be asking why Israel thought it would be a good idea just now to launch an attack within Iran itself.

Why may I ask did they attack the embassy in Syria?

They thought they could get away with it, they've been bickering with Iran for years now, but an Iranian General got killed this time.

Don’t forget that Israel has to defend itself

I think thats the problem here

Its all about not being seen to be weak

Plus, Ben is toast as soon as it all calms down so he will prolong it as long as he can and to hell with the consequences for the rest of the world

On the embassy, didnt they claim the bloke behind october was holed up there?

We are irrelevant. Our parliament couldn’t even stop bickering long enough to agree on an amendment the useless twats.

we are sleep walking into a massive Middle East conflict that should have been foreseen once Israel started bombing Gaza. Putin will be loving it.

"Take the win" from Sleepy Joe. The win. FFS.

Over 300 weapons launched at Israel, most fended off by Israels first class defence system ably assisted by the UK and the US.

Get real. This is not a win but a further demonstration, if ever it were needed, of evil intent based on true genocide - the complete annihilation of jews and the state of Israel.

It was to take out the Quds Force commanders located in the consulate, who would have been involved in the planning of the terrorist attacks on 7th October

Whether it was a wise thing to do is a different matter

Not the first time they've carried out such moves.

Aye

Haven’t seen the evidence that they were involved in the 7th Oct attack, but I assume they were.

Bombing consulates are pretty much a no go, though you can see why this would go down as an act of self defence if they got people who may orchestrate another attack against them.

Either way they got the people involved &, they dealt with the retaliation. A heavy response in return would be daft. But you’d not put it past the current mob in charge.

Especially as the Iranian attack was carefully calibrated to be a (relatively) harmless face saving exercise

Can't find the clip at the minute but on Joe Lycetts show Dyer retracted calling DC a twat.

Said he should've called him a cunt.
