I notice it happening with TV pundits a lot in last few years as if they're coached or encouraged to grow a personality.

Shearer went from dull to opinionated. Sutton went from miserable to still miserable but proper shouty on commentary. Owen has had a go as well round the time his book came out.

All that said though I still wouldn't fancy crossing Keane!

Not all of em. Ian Wright curtailed the clown act and is now a much better pundit.

Great topic for another thread.  Agreed on Shearer, he seemed to flick a switch about 10 years ago and became "angry/opinionated".  Sutton has become a laugh a minute on 5 live, some of it good stuff, some of it forced.  That's where Ian Wright is an exception, his on screen personality is just him being him, total enthusiasm.  The worst of all the invented personalities is McManaman, I always feel its a complete act, having to appear interested and relatively eloquent.  Cant bear him.

Fucking hell Mcmanaman he is horrendous everything he says makes my skin crawl. Hows he managed to get such a regular slot? Same for Clinton Morrison as well really they're probably my two most loathed at the moment.

I love Ian Wright me, how honest he is about his life and where he's come from through his career. Could listen to him almost day. I remember the early years of him being a pundit on England games though he was as mad as Jonathan Pearce's old commentaries were!

I was listening to the Villa game the other day on the radio and he was commentating, crikey. He seems like a enough nice lad but it sounded like he was playing word bingo. It was bad.

Yeah theyve been decent them! They actually all genuinely get along, must be a great job getting sent to world cups and euros as a presenting team like that. I remember them all pissed in Russia the night we beat Sweden 😆

Agree with that about Wright.  Very likeable, humble and genuinely enthusiastic about the game.  Underrated eloquence too, talks very passionately and knowledgeably  about racism and other issues.  (autobiography A Life In Football is superb, has a great story to tell).

I like Clinton Morrisson, he's not the most eloquent but is another with genuine enthusiasm and can add knowledge of playing in the lower divisions as well as the top end.  Decent on 5 live, I find him easier to listen to than Micah Richards.  Just over exciteable, laughing at things that aren't remotely funny which interrupts others.

Yeah watched them all.  I expected to lose interest and get bored with it but I loved every episode. Most of the time I forgot what the topic was, it was just good listening to their admiration of players from the past and their anecdotes.  Wright describing scoring in the Cup Final  for Palace - proper emotional stuff.

I didn't know he had a book out I'll look for that, really gone off reading during lockdown especially football books so might use that as a way back in.

Knowledge about playing isnt shared enough by pundits. Defensive players seem to share how they played more than attackers I think. Maybe if you're a natural attacking talent it's harder to explain than someone who has been coached how to defend.

The person I wish would explain more is Shearer. I idolised him as a player and got a lot of time for him as a pundit but he never really explains how he scored goals or how he would have played in a certain situation during games hes commenting on. All you get is "I was just lucky enough that it went in the back of the net".

I have that downloaded so will give it a try. Really strange feeling with reading last few months I thought it would be an ideal time but cant settle my mind long enough to concentrate on a book. End up on here or refreshing Twitter.

D’you know, I never remember the St John’s bit. It must’ve come along in an effort to make it slightly more family friendly because I’m 100% certain we used to sing, “You’re goin’ ‘ome in a fuckin’ ambulance!
