Not in Crawley Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 I've lived in loads of places, and there is a singular truth I've come to know is that locals who start talking about postcodes in relation to identity are to be well avoided. Quote
tomski Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 Yeah can’t say it’s important to me, still write Bolton lancs but I think it’s solely down to habit and the fact it’s a little easier when submitting my address. Once places confirm they don’t need county I’ll happily stop adding it Quote

Once places confirm they don’t need county I’ll happily stop adding it When I was in Bromley I always put Bromley, Kent not Bromley Gtr London. I think most people know the difference between counties and unitary areas. Same when I worked in Enfield - Herts was the address. Apart from liverpudllians- but them adopting Merseyside as an identity over Lancashire is more to do with differential over Manchester. But then over the last 60 years they've managed to change their accent as well. Quote

Ended up in Cheadle Hulme because that's where the other half is from Address wise They all think it's Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire It's not really, it's either Stockport or GM So plenty (on Facebook) just refer to it as SK8 because places like Wilmslow, Prestbury and Alderley Edge are SK postcodes too "Does anyone know of a decent window cleaner in SK8?" Etc There was fucking uproar when it got put in tier 3 lockdown with Greater Manchester and places like Handforrh were in tier 2 because they're 1 mile away over the border in Cheshire Quote

Guest Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 I don’t think sliding down the islamohobic rabbit hole of reform or Tommy Robinson is a good idea. Equally though I also think pretending there isn’t an issue isn’t a good idea either. To me it seems like a small group of Muslims in this country, co-opted by elements of the extreme left are a potential problem and the election simply confirmed that. I don’t think we want sectarian politics which we are in danger of getting. Quote

I did and I think it's a bit of a naive point of view, I don't see it as you shutting down the debate as such, more that you're dismissive of the points raised and not willing to discuss them because of where they stem from and preconception of those making them you think that might not be the case, but it's what it looks like from over here Quote

And the last thing the situation needs is folk being labelled thickos and racists. It also doesn't mean anyone raising such issues is tarring the whole of the Muslim population with the same brush as was suggested over the weekend by various posters. Folk like @Cheesemake the discussion untenable, polairise the situation even further and that is extremely dangerous precedent. That's how you end up with plonkers like Tommy Robinson and even worst on the opposite side and their preachers of hate. Quote
Duck Egg Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 There's a lot of Islamophobic crap doing the rounds on SM at the moment, promoted by our Tommeh and his cohorts. I got sent one yesterday suggesting Rayguns had desecrated a church in Stoke, tarmaccing over Christian gravestones as they built a new mosque. A 5 minute search on Google showed the building hadn't been a church since 1982, had been a tea rooms, an auction house before being an abandoned lot for the past umpteen years. During construction of the mosque, the Council had come across the old memorial flagstones and stacked them nicely for relocation. There's undoubtedly some genuine concerns about integration and certain aspects of Islam but it's going to be lost in such bullshit propaganda. Quote
Ani Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 If anyone thinks the way to counter Reform is to call their supporters ' thick racists' they are stupid, it just stokes their support. Why are people voting Reform as they did for Brexit and then you can start. Look at the areas where they are strongest , it is the poorer more deprived areas where people are most fucked off and affected by cost of living crisis. Tories never gave a fuck about them , Labour needs to be different as people wanting 'change' beyond what the Greens and Liberals can offer. Quote
