It seems crazy to have let foreigners into the UK in April and May but then make them quarantine for a fortnight from June. The airline industry will be pigsick about that decision if it goes through Quote

Instinctively I agree with you. We live on an island, we should be able to close borders and inhibit reinfection. However when this is discussed and expert input is sought it turns out the evidence hasn't supported the popular view. This study looked at attempts at border screening during SARS epidemic: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4313627/ Quote Historically, most attempts at border screening have been ineffectual, as demonstrated by the pandemic spread of SARS and influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 to many countries despite the use of border screening. Modeling and observational studies have indicated that border screening is likely to be unsuccessful in preventing or delaying the entry of such diseases into a country. Border screening generally has high opportunity costs, both financially and in terms of the use of scarce public health staff resources at a time of high need. We conclude that border screening should not be used. Instead, the less costly measure of providing information to arriving travelers is recommended, together with effective communication with local clinicians and more effective disease control measures in the community. I think they'll happen because politically it's damaging to have photos of people coming in to the country from other affected areas, but to repeat, the expert opinion seems to be that they're not as effective as the layman would assume. Tombwfc Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 Yeah, I think they've made the case fairly well on why it's been allowed to happen and why it'll have to change once the wider population is allowed out more. But then, I also remember similar well reasoned arguments being made in early March as to why going to football matches was low risk. And how masks weren't worth bothering with, which is surely also about to change. The science is rarely cut and dried on anything I suppose. Quote

Weirdly I am going to defend the Gov to you ! Feels wrong way round. We need the airports open as even passenger flights bring in freight. The checks at the airport are really basic just checking temps so will miss a high % of people and pick up non Carona cases. The numbers coming in mean policing a quarantine would be impossible. These tests would cause massive delays at airport and use up resource that could be used elsewhere. Once the infection was rife in the country it was decided the resource was better spent on dealing with cases already here and stopping that spreading would be more effective than picking out individuals at airport. As the number of infections drop in the country the idea of stopping people coming in with potential infection makes more sense. Basically the benefit of testing at airports was deemed minimal compared to the risk and benefit. Quote

Spider Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 Had to drive from Horwich to Bolton a few times today to empty my mums place. If this is a lockdown, I’m made of blancmange. There are groups of lads all over the shop, wandering around drinking lager. It’s like the middle of summer. Might as well lift it entirely and let the lot catch it. Wankers. Quote
